Which safety pins should I choose?
Everyday safety pins for sewing and mending
Standard safety pins temporarily fasten fabric, hold pieces during fitting and help with everyday mending and craft work. Prym's range includes steel pins and gold-coloured or silver-coloured brass options. Choose the length and pack quantity for your project, and check the material in the individual listing. A finish colour does not tell you what metal a pin is made from.
Which size safety pin do I need?
Compare the actual length in millimetres: the listed range includes small 22mm black pins, 27mm and 50mm steel packs, and brass options in 27mm, 38mm and 50mm. Smaller pins suit compact fastening jobs; longer pins provide more reach through layered fabric. Length alone does not determine shaft thickness or suitability for delicate cloth. Size numbers can vary between ranges, so use each product's measurements rather than assuming every No. 0 or No. 2 is identical.
Curved safety pins for quilt basting
Curved basting pins help scoop through the quilt top, batting and backing while the layers lie flat. Compare Bohin's 39mm curved pins, the 38mm steel basting-pin pack and Clover Wonder Pins. Clover Wonder Pins have a different opening and closing mechanism from a conventional safety pin; follow the product instructions. Keep the layers smooth, close pins fully and remove them as you quilt each section.
Assorted packs or bulk boxes?
Choose an assorted pack when you need several sizes for a sewing kit, household mending or craft projects. Prym offers mixed 27mm, 38mm and 50mm packs; the Hobby Gift glass jar contains five listed lengths from 19mm to 38mm. Bulk options suit frequent use and workrooms, including Prym's 34mm box and Tiger's 22mm black pins. Check the exact quantity, size and finish before ordering a bulk pack.
Using safety pins with your fabric
Test on a scrap if the material marks easily. Use smooth pins, replace bent or damaged ones and close the clasp securely after use. For leather, coated fabric and materials that retain holes, consider sewing clips or pattern weights for suitable tasks. Store sharp pins securely between projects.
