Sew-on, press-fit or tool-free: which snaps do I need?
Sew-on press studs for discreet closures
Sew-on snaps are stitched through the fixing holes on each half. They are useful for garment openings, linings, small accessories and repairs where you want a closure without a buttonhole. Choose from black sew-on snaps, Pony nickel snaps and Birch brass snap fasteners. Align both halves carefully before sewing them securely in place; no snap-setting press is needed.
Non-sew press snaps for garments and accessories
Non-sew snaps are fitted through the material rather than stitched onto it. The range includes Hemline 11mm solid-top and ring-top fashion snaps, Prym Love 8mm Jersey snaps and Prym Mini and decorative press fasteners. Check the pack’s fabric guidance and required setting method before choosing.
Prym Jersey snaps are designed for thin, stretchy fabrics. Their serrated rings attach without pre-punching a hole; use the fitting method specified for the exact pack. Other snap systems may require a prepared hole, so do not apply the same method to every fastening.
ByAnnie tool-free snaps for pockets and bag flaps
ByAnnie Tool-Free Snaps press together by hand without a specialist snap-setting press. You still need to prepare the holes, using a suitable awl and the manufacturer’s instructions. Each pack contains four complete sets in Antique Brass, Black Metal or Nickel. Check the material thickness and test on matching scraps before fitting your finished project.
Matching snap sizes, packs & installation tools
Does one snap tool fit every press stud?
No. Match the brand, snap series, diameter and tool instructions—not just the size on the packet. Prym Jersey, Anorak, Sport & Camping and Color Snaps use different fitting inserts. Hemline fashion snaps also need the specified compatible tool; a Prym insert is not automatically a match.
The Prym Jersey 8mm and 10mm tool set is an option for the matching Prym snaps with the VARIO Creative Tool or compatible VARIO pliers. Check what is supplied in your fastener pack before ordering extra inserts. A tool set is not a pack of snaps, and fitting inserts are not a complete press.
How do I choose a snap size and pack?
Consider the fabric layers, the space available, the visible finish and how firmly the closure needs to hold. Check the selected variant for its diameter, colour, pack quantity and availability. A larger cap does not by itself mean a stronger or more suitable fastening. Follow the pack’s guidance on reinforcement and test a complete fastening on the same fabric layers first.
Can I remove an incorrectly fitted snap?
Removal tools are specific to the fastener system. The Prym Color Snaps removal kit in this collection is for the stated 9mm and 12.4mm Color Snaps; it is not a universal remover for metal press studs. Follow its instructions, and be aware that removing a fitted snap can leave a hole or mark in the fabric.
