Choosing and using pinking shears
What are pinking shears used for?
Pinking shears cut a repeating zigzag edge instead of the straight edge made by ordinary fabric scissors. Use them to trim suitable woven seam allowances, prepare fabric swatches or add a decorative finish to bunting and fabric crafts. They are a finishing tool, not a substitute for accurate pattern cutting with dressmaking shears.
Do pinking shears stop fabric fraying?
A pinked edge can help reduce fraying on suitable woven fabrics, but it does not seal the edge or prevent every loose thread. Test an offcut first. Loosely woven fabrics, heavily used seams and garments that need frequent washing may still need overlocking, zigzag stitching, binding or another appropriate seam finish. Choose the finish for the fabric and garment construction.
Classic handles or spring-assisted pinking shears?
Compare the handle opening, weight and cutting action as well as the listed length. Fiskars Easy Action pinking shears use a spring to reopen the blades after each cut, reducing the effort of opening them repeatedly. Traditional loop-handle options include metal and moulded-handle designs. Klasse’s all-metal shears have a ball-bearing joint, while the Mundial 8.5-inch model has polypropylene handles. Choose a grip that suits your hand; do not assume every model is designed for left-handed use.
Choosing the right size and style
This range includes Bohin’s 20cm shears, Klasse’s 22.5cm model and Hemline Gold’s 23.5cm black-and-gold design, alongside other sizes. Listed overall length is not the same as usable cutting length. Check each product’s measurements, materials and intended use before ordering, particularly for thick fabrics or several layers.

How to get an even pinked edge
Keep the fabric flat, clear pins and fasteners from the cutting line, and work with steady, controlled cuts. Align the teeth with the previous cut as you move along the edge. Do not force the blades through bulky layers. Keep fabric shears separate from paper-cutting tools, wipe away lint after use and store them dry with the blades protected.
Pinking shears or a rotary pinking blade?
Handheld pinking shears work with shaped opposing blades. A rotary pinking blade is a separate accessory that requires a compatible rotary cutter and cutting mat.
