Choosing the right paper for your project
Pattern paper or transfer paper?
Pattern paper is the surface on which you copy, draft or adjust a pattern. Dressmakers’ transfer paper passes markings onto fabric, usually with a tracing wheel or other specified tool. Check the product description: “tracing paper” may refer to either task.
Plain, dot-and-cross or enlarging paper?
Plain paper is useful for tracing and working through adjustments. Dot-and-cross and gridded enlarging papers provide reference points for alignment and scaling. Check sheet or roll dimensions so the paper is large enough for your pattern pieces.
How is freezer paper used in quilting?
Freezer paper can be used for appliqué templates and other fabric-craft methods. Its coated side behaves differently from ordinary drafting paper. Follow the pack’s pressing instructions and confirm printer suitability before feeding any coated paper through a printer.
Will transfer marks come out?
Removal depends on the transfer product and fabric. Test a spare piece first, including the recommended removal method, before marking the garment. Avoid heat-setting marks unintentionally and do not assume every colour is suitable for every cloth.
