Madeira needle types, pack sizes & machine fit
Match the needle system to your machine first, then choose the point and size for your fabric and thread. “Universal” describes the needle type—not guaranteed fit for every machine.
Which universal pack should I choose?
9455 contains five matching 80/12 needles for suitable everyday woven fabrics. 9459 is the assorted pack: two 70/10, two 80/12 and one 90/14. 9459T Titanium Universal has a wear-resistant surface treatment and a different mix: two 75/11, two 80/12 and one 90/14. The coating does not replace choosing the correct point or changing a damaged needle.
Embroidery, metallic thread or adhesive backing?
9450 Universal Embroidery 75/11 is an embroidery-specific pack for suitable rayon and polyester threads; it is different from the general-sewing universal range. 9451 Metallic 90/14 has an elongated, coated eye for metallic-thread passage. 9456 Anti-Glue 75/11 helps reduce adhesive build-up with sticky stabilisers and embroidery sprays. Each contains five needles. Match your backing and design to the fabric, and test first.
Quilting, denim & stretch fabrics
9454 Quilting combines three 75/11 and two 90/14 needles for cotton piecing and suitable quilt layers. 9457 Jeans contains three 90/14 and two 100/16 for heavier woven fabrics such as denim and canvas. 9458 Super Stretch contains three 75/11 and two 90/14 for highly elastic materials. These types have different needle geometry: size alone does not make them interchangeable. Test the complete seam or quilt sandwich.
Specialist Lana & Glamour embroidery
9452 Wool Lana is for suitable voluminous embroidery threads such as Lana 12. 9453 Glamour is for heavier decorative embroidery threads, including suitable Glamour 12 and Decora 12 applications. Follow the exact thread's needle recommendation, check the size shown on the product listing and confirm your machine's limits. Bulky threads need a suitable design and stitch spacing—not a dense design intended for fine thread.
Are ELx705 needles right for my overlocker?
9462 Overlock is a six-needle pack: three 80/12 and three 90/14, with a medium ball point. It belongs to the specialised ELx705 family; the supplied packet is marked EL705CRSUK. Check the complete specification in your overlocker or coverstitch manual. Not every overlocker uses ELx705, and these are not a general replacement for household 130/705H or HAx1 SP needles.
What do 75/11 and 90/14 mean?
Each pair describes one needle size in two numbering systems. Higher numbers indicate a thicker needle, not a different system. Choose for the fabric, thread and combined layers while staying within your machine's capacity. Fit a fresh needle if it bends, becomes damaged or begins causing stitching problems, and check threading and tension before continuing.
