Choosing eyelet sizes, finishes & fitting tools
Which eyelets should I buy?
Start with the cord, lace or opening your project needs, then check the eyelet’s stated dimensions, fabric thickness and fitting instructions. The range includes small assorted craft packs, 7mm Hemline kits and Prym 5mm, 11mm and 14mm eyelets. Check each listing for the pack quantity, included washers, finish options and current availability.
For drawstring bags and garments, allow enough clearance for the cord to move freely. For decorative lacing and costumes, choose a finish that suits the rest of your hardware. Reinforce the surrounding fabric where your pattern or eyelet instructions require it, and test on a scrap of the same layers before fitting the finished item.
Which tool fits my eyelets?
- Hemline starter packs: use the matching setting tool supplied in the kit and follow the enclosed instructions. These are intended for lightweight sewing and craft applications.
- Prym 4mm, 5mm and 8mm eyelet tooling: tool set 673131 is designed for the VARIO Creative Tool; Prym also lists compatible VARIO pliers as an option. Eyelets are separate from the tool set.
- Prym 11mm and 14mm eyelet tooling: choose the 673127 tool set with the VARIO Creative Tool. Do not assume every eyelet size works with every pair of setting pliers.
- Hole-punching inserts: these prepare holes; they are not a replacement for the matching eyelet-setting dies. Follow the specified hole size and tool compatibility for your pack.
Some packs include fitting tools and others require them separately. A craft hammer is useful where the eyelet pack specifies a hammer-setting method. Check what you already have before adding a press, pliers or replacement insert set.
Eyelets for bag making, drawstrings & craft projects
What can I use sewing eyelets for?
Eyelets create a neat opening for cords, ribbon and lacing. Common uses include drawstring bags, garment details, costume lacing, small accessories and decorative craft projects. Choose the eyelet construction and fitting method for the material and the strain the finished item will experience; a small craft kit is not automatically suitable for heavy-duty canvas work.
Are eyelets and grommets interchangeable?
Both terms appear when shopping for reinforced openings, but names alone do not establish compatibility. Compare the stated size, material, washer arrangement and required setting tools. If you are matching an existing fitting, contact Direct Sewing with its measurements and a photograph before ordering.
Do I need to sew eyelets in?
The metal eyelets in this collection are non-sew fittings, installed using the matching tool and the manufacturer’s method. Prepare and reinforce the fabric as directed, make the specified opening and fit the parts correctly. Always test the result before working on your finished project.
