Choose the right dressmaking shears
- Length and control: an 8-inch pair is a useful starting point for garment cutting. Shorter fabric scissors help with curves and smaller pieces; 10–12-inch tailor's shears offer longer strokes on larger pattern pieces. Compare the tool's weight, grip and stated fabric suitability as well as its size.
- Everyday or professional: compare the KAI 8-inch dressmaking shears and Klasse everyday dressmaking scissors with the KAI 7250 professional tailor's shears. A larger or heavier pair is not automatically the most comfortable choice.
- Left-handed cutting: choose a model specifically described as left-handed. Options include KAI N5210L, Klasse left-handed dressmaking shears and Fiskars left-handed scissors. Check the individual listing rather than assuming a soft grip means either-hand use.
- Blade style and comfort: the Mundial serrated sewing scissors help grip fabric while cutting. Prefer blades that reopen after each cut? Compare the Fiskars Easy Action shears. Check each product's intended materials before cutting heavy or slippery fabric.
- Keep the edge for fabric: use a separate pair for paper patterns, avoid cutting over pins and wipe the blades clean after use. For loose thread ends and close finishing, add thread snips rather than using large shears for every task.
Sizes usually describe the overall tool length, not the cutting blade. Check each product page for dimensions, handedness and current availability.
