Bobbin & case compatibility guide

Start with the exact model

Find the full model number on your machine and the bobbin specification in its manual. Compare the listed part number, diameter, height, shape and material. Class 15, Class 15J and Class 66 are different bobbin types; do not substitute plastic for metal, or vice versa, unless your machine manufacturer permits it.

A bobbin, a case or a storage box?

The bobbin carries the lower thread. A bobbin case or holder supports it inside the machine; a storage box simply organises spare bobbins. Front-loading cases, drop-in holders and industrial cases have different fittings. Match the replacement part number, not just its colour or appearance.

Check specialist systems carefully

JUKI TL, Brother PQ and Janome HD9 listings have their own model-specific bobbins or cases. Janome HD9 Version 1 and Version 2 bobbins are not interchangeable. Bernina-compatible CB, rotary and other hook-system parts also need an exact match. For industrial machines, check the full model and subclass as well as the machine type.

Choosing prewound bobbins

Prewound bobbins arrive with thread already wound. Check the stated style, size, thread and construction—plastic, paper-sided or sideless—as well as your machine's requirements. L-style and Class 15 are separate shopping filters here; neither label guarantees suitability for every domestic or embroidery machine.

Winding, storing & keeping spares

Choose a separate bobbin winder that supports your bobbin dimensions, centre hole and power or drive requirements. Wind evenly using the machine or winder instructions. Keep labelled spares together in a bobbin box, ring or organiser, especially if you use several machines with different bobbin systems. Browse thread and bobbin storage for boxes, racks, rings and spool-pairing tools.

For everyday sewing, quilting or embroidery, browse our sewing thread and machine needles. If the fit is unclear, contact Direct Sewing with your full machine model, existing part number and clear photos before ordering.
