Construct, finish, fasten and decorate

Straight stitches

Everyday seams, hems, topstitching, repairs, gathering preparation and a wide range of construction jobs.

Zigzag + utility

Raw-edge finishing, appliqué, elastic application, reinforcement and techniques that need side-to-side needle movement.

Stretch stitches

Selected formations for suitable knit fabrics when used with the correct stretch/ballpoint needle and settings.

Decorative stitches

Add borders and visible surface details to garments, crafts, gifts and home-sewn accessories.

Overedge-style stitches

Neaten raw edges on a regular sewing machine; these do not trim fabric or replace a dedicated overlocker.

Four-step buttonhole

Sew the two columns and two bartacks in a controlled sequence using the included buttonhole foot.

Reverse stitching

Use the front lever to secure many seams at the beginning and end where backstitching is appropriate.

Twin-needle sewing

Create two parallel upper rows for decorative work and selected hemming techniques with a compatible twin needle.

Mechanical controls that make sense at a glance

Choose the stitch, set the length and stay focused on the fabric

Stitch-selector dial

The 24 stitches are displayed on the machine; rotate the dial to make the selection.

Adjustable stitch length

Shorten or lengthen compatible stitches to suit the fabric, seam and visual effect.

Preset stitch width

The machine establishes stitch width for the selected pattern, with a published maximum of 5mm.

Upper-thread tension

Adjust the balance when the fabric, needle, thread or technique needs something beyond the normal range.

Reverse lever

Hold the lever to stitch backwards and secure suitable seams without changing the selected stitch.

Foot-controller speed

Control the sewing pace through pedal pressure, leaving both hands available to guide the work.

Less time getting ready, more time sewing

Threading and bobbin features remove common beginner friction

Follow the marked upper-thread path, raise the needle fully and use the built-in needle threader to help draw thread through the needle eye. The front-loading bobbin sits in a removable case beneath the needle plate.

For the best fit and reliable winding, use the stated SINGER Class 15J transparent bobbin style rather than substituting a similar-looking bobbin.

Front-loading tip: hold the bobbin thread while turning the handwheel toward you to bring the lower thread up through the needle plate before starting the seam.
Built-in needle threader

Assists with passing upper thread through the needle eye.

Marked thread path

Guides the upper thread through the tension and take-up system.

Front-loading bobbin

Uses a separate bobbin case beneath a smooth needle plate.

Automatic bobbin winding

Disengages needle movement while winding the bobbin on top.

Class 15J transparent

The bobbin type specified on Direct Sewing's current listing and manual.

Built-in thread cutter

Provides a convenient place to cut thread tails after sewing.

Small features that expand the project list

Free arm, drop feed and snap-on feet make the machine more versatile

Removable free arm

Slide off the accessory compartment for improved access to trouser hems, cuffs, sleeves and other tubes.

Drop feed

Lower the feed teeth for sewing on buttons and guided free-motion work where you move the fabric yourself.

Snap-on presser feet

Change between the all-purpose, zipper, buttonhole and button-sewing feet without unscrewing the holder.

Twin-needle capability

Use a compatible twin needle for parallel rows when the selected stitch and setup permit.

LED work light

Illuminates the needle and presser-foot area while remaining cool during normal operation.

Built-in storage

Keep the supplied feet, bobbins, needles and small tools inside the removable compartment.

Use straight stitch and the free arm to shorten and finish everyday garments.

Match needle type and size to the fabric before threading the machine.

2

Wind the bobbin

Use a correct Class 15J transparent bobbin and follow the winding path.

3

Thread the machine

Raise the foot and needle, follow the marked route, then use the threader.

4

Select the stitch

Turn the selector to the stitch shown in the manual or on the front chart.

5

Test a scrap

Sew the real fabric and layer count; check length, balance and feed.

6

Secure + sew

Lower the presser foot, begin slowly and backstitch when the seam calls for it.

Choose by the work you actually want to sew

Where this compact mechanical machine fits best

Buying question What the SM024 offers What to consider
Is it beginner friendly? Two main dials, visible stitch chart, built-in needle threader and manual controls make the workflow easy to follow. A four-step buttonhole requires moving through each stage; it is not a one-step automatic buttonhole.
Can it sew clothing? Yes—basic, stretch, decorative, zip, button and buttonhole functions cover many everyday garments. Choose the correct needle, thread and seam finish for the fabric.
Can it finish raw edges? Its zigzag and overedge-style stitches can neaten many seam allowances. It does not trim and wrap edges like a dedicated overlocker.
Can it sew denim? With the correct denim needle it can manage suitable everyday alterations and reasonable layer changes. It is not marketed as part of SINGER's higher-powered Heavy Duty range; avoid promising unrestricted thick-layer performance.
Can it quilt? It can piece and use drop feed for guided free-motion work on manageable projects. The compact throat space is better suited to smaller work than bulky bed-size quilts.
Is stitch width adjustable? The stitch width is preset for the selected pattern, with a published maximum width of 5mm. Choose another model if independent manual width control is essential.

Frequently asked questions

SINGER SM024 FAQs

Is the SINGER SM024 suitable for beginners?

Yes. It has clear mechanical dials, an on-machine stitch chart, built-in needle threader, adjustable stitch length and a useful selection that can support both early lessons and more varied projects.

Does it have 24 stitches or 97 stitches?

It has 24 actual built-in stitches. SINGER counts 97 stitch applications—the different jobs those stitches can perform when combined with particular settings, feet, needles and techniques.

Is the buttonhole automatic?

It is a four-step buttonhole. You use the included buttonhole foot and move through the two columns and two bartacks using the selector sequence; it is not a one-step automatic buttonhole.

Does it have an automatic needle threader?

Yes. The built-in threader assists with pulling the upper thread through the needle eye when the needle is positioned correctly.

What bobbins does the SM024 use?

Use SINGER Class 15J transparent bobbins, as stated by Direct Sewing and the supplied instructions. Similar-looking bobbins may differ enough to affect stitch formation.

Is the bobbin top loading or front loading?

It is front loading. The bobbin fits into a removable bobbin case beneath the needle plate, leaving the sewing surface smooth.

Can it sew stretch fabric?

It includes stretch-stitch options. Pair the selected stitch with the correct ballpoint/stretch needle and suitable thread, then test the actual fabric and layers before sewing.

Does it have adjustable stitch width?

Stitch width is preset for the selected pattern, with a maximum published width of 5mm. Stitch length is adjustable.

Can it sew buttonholes and zips?

Yes. A four-step buttonhole function and buttonhole foot are included, along with a zipper foot for sewing close to zip teeth and raised edges.

Does it have a free arm?

Yes. Slide off the removable accessory compartment to expose the free arm for cuffs, trouser hems, sleeves and other tubular pieces.

Can I lower the feed dogs?

Yes. The drop-feed control lowers the feed teeth for button sewing and guided free-motion techniques where you control fabric movement.

Is it a Heavy Duty SINGER machine?

It has a full metal internal frame, but it is not positioned as part of SINGER's higher-powered Heavy Duty range. Choose it for approachable everyday mechanical sewing rather than unrestricted thick-layer work.

Does its overedge stitch replace an overlocker?

No. It can neaten suitable raw edges with zigzag or overedge-style stitches, but it does not trim and wrap the fabric edge in one operation like an overlocker.

Which colour should I choose?

Direct Sewing offers Red and Turquoise accent options with the same core machine functions. Select the colour variant above the Add to Cart button.
