Schmetz Stretch needles are designed for elastic and highly elastic knitted fabrics, including suitable swimwear fabrics and fine jersey. Their medium ball point is combined with a specialised scarf, eye area and flatter shank to help the hook catch the thread loop. Choose 75/11 or 90/14 to suit the fabric and sewing thread.

Troubleshooting skipped stitches
A Stretch needle is useful when ordinary needles struggle with elastic cloth. Also check threading, fabric handling and the machine's recommended settings.

Before you start
- Check your machine's needle requirements, then choose the size for the fabric and thread.
- Switch off, fit the needle and select a stitch that provides the stretch needed by the seam.
- Sew matching layers without pulling them; inspect both the relaxed seam and its gentle stretch.
For thicker sewing threads, compare Super Stretch needles: their larger eye and wider groove provide a different thread-handling option for elastic materials.
Good to know
Is this the same as a Jersey Ballpoint needle?
No. Both have rounded points, but Stretch adds specialised geometry for stitch formation in elastic knitted fabrics.
Does the needle make any straight seam elastic?
No. The stitch structure and thread must also allow the required stretch; test the finished seam before relying on it.
