Schmetz · Household leather-cutting needles

A cutting point for leather seams.

Schmetz Leather needles use an LL twist cutting point to penetrate leather and suitable hard imitation leather. The cut can create a slightly angled stitch appearance, adding character to visible seams. Choose the needle size with the thread and material together, keeping the leather thickness and layers within your household machine's capabilities.

Five needles per pack. Choose 80/12, 110/18, 120/19 or the Assorted option.

Small leather projects

Try suitable leather accessories or repairs on a compatible machine. Sample the layers before sewing a visible section.

Decorative top seams

Use an offcut to compare stitch lengths and thread. Longer stitches can emphasise the characteristic angled appearance.

Hard imitation leather

Consider where a cutting point suits the material. For softer backed imitation leather, try a Microtex needle first to protect its carrier fabric.

Before you start

  1. Check machine compatibility and choose a size suited to the leather, thread and total thickness.
  2. Switch off and install the needle, then choose a stitch length that avoids dense perforation.
  3. Sew an offcut and inspect the seam, especially when securing its ends or crossing existing stitching.

The cutting point can sever woven or knitted yarns, so do not use it for ordinary textile sewing. Needle holes remain visible in leather after unpicking.

Good to know

Is a leather needle simply a stronger Jeans needle?

No. Its cutting point acts differently from the Jeans needle's rounded point; the material determines which is appropriate.

Should I use very short stitches?

Avoid crowding the holes. Test a longer stitch length so the seam stays secure without excessively perforating the leather.
