Compact control for detailed cutting

Turn tighter curves and cut smaller shapes with a 28mm blade

The OLFA RTY-1/C 28mm Rotary Cutter is the precise little cutter to reach for when a full-size rotary blade feels too broad. Its compact blade follows curves, templates and narrow strips with greater control, while OLFA's quick-change clasp makes blade replacement refreshingly simple.

  • 28mm tungsten-steel blade gives manoeuvrable control for detailed fabric cutting.
  • Right- or left-handed setup lets you position the blade on the side that suits your cutting hand.
  • Quick blade change releases the blade with a sliding clasp and avoids a pile of easy-to-lose parts.
  • Full blade cover shields the sharp edge for safer storage between cutting sessions.

Why choose a 28mm rotary cutter?

The smaller blade changes how easily the cutter can turn

A compact blade has a tighter turning circle than a 45mm or 60mm cutter. That makes the RTY-1/C especially useful for shapes, small pattern pieces and cutting lines that change direction frequently.

Curves and templates

Follow smaller curves, circles, scallops and reusable templates without repeatedly lifting and repositioning a large blade.

Narrow strips and pieces

Cut bias strips, small patchwork pieces, applique components and compact pattern sections with a clear view of the line.

Detailed craft cutting

Use the manoeuvrable 28mm format for fabric, paper, rubber sheet and film, always with a suitable cutting mat and project-appropriate blade.

Size choice matters: the 28mm blade excels at detail and curves. Choose a 45mm cutter for general quilting and longer straight cuts, or a 60mm cutter when greater depth and leverage are needed for larger-scale work.

Designed for accurate, controlled movement

A sharp circular blade that rolls through the cut

The installed OLFA blade rotates as the cutter moves forward, helping it pass through soft materials without the lifting action of ordinary scissors. The slim handle keeps the cutting line visible and easy to guide.

Tungsten-steel cutting edge

OLFA's 28mm blade is made for a durable, sharp rotary edge across a wide range of fabric and craft cutting tasks.

Small turning radius

The compact blade can change direction more readily than larger rotary cutters, making it a practical choice for detailed work.

Bright OLFA handle

The distinctive yellow handle is easy to identify in a busy sewing space and includes a hanging hole for convenient storage.

A proper cutting setup makes the difference

Use the blade cover, mat and ruler deliberately

Controlled pressure, protected fingers

Four steps for cleaner rotary cutting

A fresh blade should roll through the material without excessive force. Test scraps first when the material or number of layers changes.

1

Prepare the surface

Place the material flat on a self-healing cutting mat. If using a ruler, keep your supporting fingers well inside its edge.

2

Open the blade cover

Pull the cover fully back only when the cutter is on the work surface and you are ready to begin.

3

Roll away from your body

Keep the blade vertical, apply firm controlled pressure and move in a smooth direction away from hands and body.

4

Cover the blade immediately

Close the cover completely before lifting the cutter from the mat, setting it down or storing it.

Sharp blade safety: keep every finger clear of the blade path, never cut towards your body, never leave the edge exposed, and keep the cutter away from children. Replace a chipped, damaged or skipping blade rather than applying more pressure.
Set it up for your dominant hand

Suitable for right- and left-handed cutting

The RTY-1/C can be configured with the blade on either side of the handle. Mounting it on the appropriate side keeps the cutting edge visible and lets the cutter sit against a ruler in the direction that suits your hand.

A particularly useful choice for...

  • Applique shapes and detailed templates
  • Small curves and compact pattern pieces
  • Narrow fabric and bias strips
  • Patchwork pieces and small blocks
  • Right- or left-handed sewists
  • Fabric, paper, film and similar craft materials

Choose a larger or different tool for...

  • Long, repetitive cutting through yardage
  • Very thick fabric stacks or heavy materials
  • Cutting without a protective mat
  • Tasks with hidden pins, clips or fasteners
  • Any material that requires excessive pressure
  • Work that needs a guarded squeeze-handle safety cutter
Keep fabric blades for fabric: although the cutter can handle several craft materials, paper and abrasive surfaces dull an edge more quickly. A dedicated fabric blade helps maintain clean quilting and dressmaking cuts.
Quick blade replacement

Release and secure the blade with a sliding clasp

The quick-change system removes the need to dismantle a stack of small nuts and washers. Keep the cutter blade-side down on a stable surface during every change.

  • Position the blade side down on a suitable flat surface.
  • Pull the rear clasp down to release the old blade.
  • Place the replacement blade correctly on the cutter.
  • Push the clasp up until the blade is secured firmly.
  • Never change the blade in the palm of your hand.

Two compatible blade styles

Replace the straight blade or change the cutting function

OLFA RB28

The standard 28mm straight rotary replacement blade for normal fabric, paper and craft cutting. One straight blade is installed in the new cutter.

OLFA PRB28

An optional 28mm perforation blade that creates a line of separated cuts for tear-off paper, film and suitable craft applications. Sold separately.

Replace, do not force

A blade that skips, drags or needs increasing pressure may be dull or damaged. A fresh compatible blade improves control and protects the project.

Helpful answers before you order

OLFA RTY-1/C FAQs

Why would I choose 28mm instead of 45mm?

The smaller 28mm blade turns more easily around tight curves and detailed shapes. A 45mm cutter is usually faster for long straight cuts and general quilting, while the 28mm model is the more manoeuvrable specialist.

Can a left-handed person use this cutter?

Yes. OLFA specifies the RTY-1/C for both right- and left-handed users. The blade must be installed on the appropriate side of the handle for the chosen cutting hand.

Which replacement blade does it use?

Use the OLFA RB28 28mm straight rotary blade. The optional OLFA PRB28 perforation blade also fits when a perforated cut is required.

Is a blade included?

Yes. One 28mm straight rotary blade is installed in the cutter.

Can it cut more than one fabric layer?

It can cut multiple light fabric layers when the blade is fresh and the material is suitable, but capacity varies with thickness, weave and finish. Test an offcut and never compensate for a dull blade with excessive pressure.

Can I use it without a cutting mat?

No. Always use a suitable cutting mat. It protects the blade, the work surface and the quality of the cut.

Is this the OLFA Deluxe rotary cutter?

No. This is the compact RTY-1/C quick-change 28mm cutter. OLFA's Deluxe safety cutters are different models with ergonomic squeeze handles and dual-action safety mechanisms.

What is included?

One OLFA RTY-1/C 28mm Rotary Cutter with one straight blade installed, supplied in OLFA retail blister packaging.

When accuracy matters more than blade size

Put a nimble 28mm OLFA cutter beside your mat

Choose the RTY-1/C for the curves, templates, narrow strips and compact shapes that call for more control than a larger rotary blade can comfortably provide.
