A quilter’s everyday companion

Fine thread. Thoughtful finishing.

Flatter piecing

The fine 50wt profile keeps thread bulk down in seams, making it a useful choice for patchwork blocks and detailed piecing.

Quiet quilting detail

Choose a close colour match for understated quilting or a contrasting solid shade when you want a clear, consistent stitch colour.

Small stitches, carefully placed

Well suited to English paper piecing and hand or machine appliqué, where a fine thread helps the fabric remain the focus.

The thread behind the finish

Cotton quality, made in Italy.

Aurifil’s long-staple Egyptian cotton and mercerised finish give this thread its fine profile and gentle sheen. The distinctive orange spool identifies the 50wt cotton range.

The 1300m format gives you a generous working length for repeated blocks, ongoing projects and favourite shades worth keeping close to your machine.

Before you begin

A considered starting point.

  • Start with an 80/12 sharp or Microtex needle, adjusted for your fabric, technique and machine.
  • Aurifil 50wt can also be used in the bobbin.
  • Test the stitch and tension on your project layers before sewing the finished piece.
  • For longarm quilting, follow your machine’s needle-system guidance and test the setup.
Keep the finish looking its best

Care follows the colour.

Care instructions depend on the shade’s dye group; not all solid colours share the same wash and bleach guidance.

Check your four-digit shade code against Aurifil’s colour and care guide, then follow the most restrictive instructions for the thread, fabric and batting. Test a stitched sample before washing the finished piece.

Good questions, clear answers

Choosing your solid colour

Is 50wt suitable for piecing and quilting?

Yes. It is a fine option for patchwork piecing and understated quilting, as well as English paper piecing and appliqué. A heavier thread may be preferable when you want a more pronounced decorative line.

Which neutral should I choose?

Compare a few shades with your fabric in natural light. Natural White 2021, Muslin 2311 and Dove 2600 offer different starting points; a short test seam is more useful than choosing from a screen alone.

Does a solid colour stay the same along the thread?

A solid shade is designed as a single colour, unlike a variegated thread that changes colour along its length. Lighting, screen settings and dye lots can still affect perceived colour.

Is this a large spool or a cone?

This is the 1300m large orange spool. Aurifil’s separate 5900m cone is a different format and is not supplied here.

How do I find the thread end?

Aurifil’s large spool has a removable base. Gently twist and remove it to release the thread end, then replace it before use.

Choose a colour that belongs in your quilt.

Start with a quiet neutral or a confident colour. Match your fabric, plan your finish and keep the shade code close for next time.
