Choose the right fit: match the screwdriver's tip shape and size to the screw. Switch off and unplug your machine before changing needles or working near moving parts.

Choosing tweezers, unpickers & machine screwdrivers

Which sewing tweezers should I choose?

Bent-nose tweezers approach the work at an angle, useful for picking up thread in confined machine areas. Straight tweezers offer a direct approach. Reverse-action tweezers open when squeezed and close when released, helping hold a small item without continuous finger pressure. Ultra-fine tips suit precise thread, appliqué and foundation-paper-piecing work; LED tweezers add light around the working tip.

Is an unpicker the same as a seam ripper?

Yes—both names describe the tool used to cut unwanted stitches. Choose a handle that feels comfortable and a tip suited to the detail of your work. The range includes basic Sew Mate unpickers, Clover seam rippers, the Prym Ergonomics stitch ripper, Madeira seam-fix® with thread-removing ends and an illuminated Sew Easy option. Cut the thread carefully, keeping the blade away from the fabric and your fingers.

Which screwdriver fits my sewing machine?

Check both the screw head and the space around it. A flat-blade screwdriver is not a substitute for a hex driver, and different hex sizes are not interchangeable. The range includes small and long drivers, Brother's 3-in-1 tool, and dedicated overlocker and coverstitch needle drivers. Match the exact model, tip size and part number in the listing; do not force a tool that does not seat correctly.

Buttonhole cutters & handy tool kits

A buttonhole cutter has a chisel-style blade for opening a stitched buttonhole; it is a separate tool from a forked seam ripper. Use it with a suitable protective cutting block, following the maker's directions. For a portable selection of essentials, compare the JACK sewing tool kit, Birch repair kit and Prym maintenance set. Contents differ, so check each listing before choosing.

For overlocker needle screws, see the drivers explicitly listed as 1.5mm hex. Brand names alone do not confirm that a driver fits every machine.

Complete your kit with machine needles, scissors and cutting tools, or machine oil and cleaning supplies. For help identifying a driver, contact Direct Sewing with your machine model and a clear photo of the screw.
