Choosing tailor’s chalk, pencils and refills
Which tailor’s chalk should I choose?
Traditional chalk slabs are a practical starting point for marking cutting outlines, darts and garment alterations. Use a clean, fine edge and light pressure for a more precise line. A chalk holder can make the slab easier to grip, while a suitable chalk sharpener helps maintain its edge. Small packs suit a home sewing kit; larger boxes are useful for busy workrooms and sewing classes.
Chalk pencils or chalk wheels?
Chalk pencils and mechanical marking pencils give you control around templates, pocket positions and small details. This range also includes water-soluble fabric pencils for washable projects. Choose a lead width and marking method that suit your fabric rather than treating every pencil as the same product.
Chalk wheels lay down a fine powder line as you guide the wheel across the fabric. Compare Clover Chaco pen-style liners, Bohin’s tracing chalk wheel and the Prym Ergonomics Mouse and Stick. Choose the grip that feels natural for the lines you need to mark, and check the refill system before ordering.
What colour chalk works on dark fabric?
White or another pale chalk colour can make guidelines easier to see on dark fabric. On pale material, choose a contrasting colour only after testing that it removes cleanly. Use the lightest mark you can comfortably follow; heavier pressure does not guarantee a better result.
Does tailor’s chalk wash out?
Removal depends on the chalk formula, colour, fabric and finish. Some marks brush away; others need the specific washing method stated on the packaging. Waxed tailor’s chalk is a separate choice and should not be treated like ordinary chalk powder. Test marking and removal before starting, and do not iron over marks unless the product instructions expressly allow it.
Match the refill to your tool
Clover Chaco liners, Bohin mechanical chalk pencils and Prym Ergonomics chalk wheels use different refill systems. Bohin 0.9mm leads are not interchangeable with the 1.4mm pencil’s refills. The Bohin 1.4mm listing offers a pencil-set option and a separate refill-set option—check your selection before adding it to the cart. Prym’s white 610956 cartridge suits its Mouse 610950 and Stick 610955. Tool bodies and refills are sold separately unless the listing states otherwise.
