Choosing the right stitch markers
Locking or split-ring markers?
Both can mark an individual stitch and be removed without sliding to the end of a knitting needle. Locking markers open and close with a clasp; split-ring markers have an opening that lets you hook them into place. They are useful for crochet rounds, shaping and reference points in knitted fabric.
When should I use a closed ring?
Closed rings sit on the knitting needle between stitches to mark a round beginning or pattern repeat. Slip the marker from one needle to the other as you work. Choose an opening that slides freely over your needle, and do not stitch a closed ring into your fabric.
Choose markers to suit your yarn
Use a manageable size and weight for the project. Small markers reduce bulk with fine yarn; larger markers are easier to handle with thicker work. Contrasting colours can distinguish shaping points from repeat boundaries. Check each pack for quantities, styles and needle-size guidance.
Sets, decorative markers and marking pins
Mixed sets give you several styles in one pouch. Decorative ring sets can make a useful project-bag gift. Knitting marking pins have a different role: use them to mark points or position knitted pieces as directed by the manufacturer.
