Which awl should I choose?
Pattern awls and straight tailor’s awls
For marking reference points or piercing pattern paper, compare the Heavy Duty Pattern Awl with the straight Clover and SewMate options. A pointed awl helps with small, precise marks; a pattern notcher makes a different type of reference mark at the paper edge.
Curved awls for sewing detail
The Clover curved awl is designed for tasks such as shaping curves, guiding cloth and undoing seams. Its bent tip offers a different working angle from a straight awl. Keep the tip and your hands clear of a moving machine needle.
Leather, fabric and bag hardware
The Prym Ergonomics Awl is specified for piercing paper, fabric and leather. ByAnnie’s Extra-Sharp Awl has a tapered shank for gradually enlarging holes and is designed for installing ByAnnie Tool-Free Snaps, including in suitable leather, vinyl and fabric projects.
Check the individual tool’s intended use and follow the fitting instructions for your hardware. Not every awl suits every leather thickness, and an awl does not replace the setting tools required by some eyelets, rivets or snaps. These are marking and piercing tools, not complete leather hand-stitching kits.
Test on an offcut, support the material on a suitable surface and keep fingers away from the point. Cover sharp tips when stored and keep out of children’s reach.
