Choosing a sewing or craft lamp: mounts, magnification & power

Floor lamp or table lamp?

A floor lamp keeps your work surface clear and can bring light beside a knitting chair, sewing table or cutting area. A freestanding table lamp sits on its own base. Compare reach and shade width with the space you want to light: a compact lamp suits close handwork, while a broader task light can cover more of a desk. Convertible models may appear in more than one group.

Clamp lamps for sewing tables & workbenches

A clamp-mounted lamp saves desk space, but needs a suitable edge and enough clearance underneath. Check the clamp opening and arm reach before buying. The Daylight Slimline 4 and Lumi ranges use clamp mounts; Superlux LSB long-reach lamps include a clamp, while the LSA models listed here include a table base. Clip-on lights offer another option for smaller work areas.

Magnetic & machine-mounted lights

For light around the needle and presser foot, compare the DS-66M and NewBrain LED-16M magnetic lamps with self-adhesive and fixed-mount alternatives. Magnetic mounts need a suitable magnetic metal surface; they will not attach directly to a plastic machine casing. Check both mounting and power arrangements. The DS-27K machine-mount lamp requires hardwiring by a qualified professional—it is not a plug-in desk lamp.

Magnification for detailed work

Magnifying lamps combine illumination with a lens for close stitching, embroidery, model work and small details. Compare lens diameter, magnification and working distance. This group also includes separate spectacle clip-on and machine-specific lenses: these are not complete lamps. Janome and JUKI magnifier accessories require compatible machine models. Keep magnifying lenses covered or away from direct sunlight when not in use.

Rechargeable, battery or mains powered?

For cordless use, compare the rechargeable Halo Go, Foldi Go, Smart Go and clip-on lights, or the Lumos wearable neck light. The pocket-sized Daylight YoYo magnifier uses AAA batteries. A folding lamp is not automatically rechargeable: the Twist 2 and Halo 5D table lamp need mains power. Check the selected model's charging lead, adaptor, battery requirements and runtime before choosing.

Colour, brightness & replacement parts

For comparing fabric and thread colours, look for a stated colour-rendering rating (CRI), as well as brightness and colour temperature. Adjustable brightness helps you suit the light to the task; lux figures are only comparable at the same distance. For replacement bulbs, match the fitting, voltage, permitted wattage and physical size. Superlux stands and bases are separate accessories; a floor-stand rod alone is not a complete stand or lamp.
