Silver Star ES-94A | Professional gravity-feed iron

Sharper seams without a separate boiler

A professional weighted steam iron for dressmaking, tailoring, alterations and workroom pressing. Its elevated 2.5L water bottle feeds the iron by gravity, providing controlled steam without a boiler unit taking up bench or floor space.

  • Purpose-built for construction pressing—open seams, flatten darts, set pleats and form crisp edges as you sew.
  • 2.5L separate water bottle supports longer sessions than a small integral iron tank.
  • Thumb-operated steam switch puts short, deliberate bursts under your working hand.
  • Teflon shoe and SF-100 water purifier are listed in the box for fabric protection and scale management.

Why a gravity-feed iron?

Professional pressing with a simpler water system

01

No separate boiler

The suspended bottle uses gravity to feed water to the heated iron, keeping the system compact and straightforward to maintain.

02

Weight that helps press

The heavier professional iron combines heat, weight and controlled steam to shape seams and garment details.

03

Steam on demand

A soft-touch thumb switch releases steam only when required, supporting a deliberate press-lift-move workflow.

Installation matters

Set it up correctly before switching on

1

Hang the bottle

Secure it more than 1.5m above the ironing surface so gravity can feed the iron.

2

Connect the hose

Join the bottle valve and iron solenoid with the supplied silicone hose.

3

Support the lines

Use the supplied hook to keep the hose and power cord clear of the work.

4

Fill + treat

Unplug first, add clean water and use the supplied purifier as instructed.

5

Heat fully

Switch on, set the dial to 4 and allow about five minutes for initial heat-up.

6

Open + test

Open the bottle valve, test steam away from the garment, then begin pressing.

The technique that prevents dripping

Pulse the steam—do not hold the switch down

The Silver Star manual recommends short bursts after the iron is fully hot. Excessively long steam activation can send water through instead of producing dry steam.

Press 1–2 secUse a short thumb-switch burst when steam is needed.
Pause 3–4 secAllow the iron to recover before the next burst.
Max 5–6 secDo not activate the steam switch continuously beyond this.
Heat firstIf water appears, check that the iron is fully heated and the dial is not too low.
Made for garment construction

Where the ES-94A earns its place

Seams + darts

Open seam allowances cleanly and flatten shaped darts during assembly.

Pleats + creases

Use heat, weight and steam to define folds and set sharper edges.

Tailoring

Support controlled shaping through jacket, trouser and structured-garment construction.

Alterations + production

Keep a dedicated pressing station ready for repeat work between sewing operations.

Temperature starting points

Match heat to the fabric—not just the task

Dial position Manufacturer guidance How to use it safely
1–2 Pre-heating range. Allow the iron to reach working temperature before requesting steam.
3 Silk or sensitive clothing; low temperature. Check the care label, use the Teflon shoe where appropriate and test on a hidden area first.
4 Cotton and wool; medium temperature. The manual uses position 4 for initial warm-up. Protect wool and nap with a suitable pressing cloth where required.
5 Other thick clothing; high temperature. Use only when the textile can tolerate high heat. Keep flammable materials away from the hot soleplate.

Always prioritise the textile care label. Fibre blends, coatings, fusibles, prints and finishes can change the safe temperature.

Heat + electrical safety

A professional iron needs a professional station

Required working habits

  • Use a stable ironing surface and secure the bottle so it cannot fall.
  • Always rest the hot iron flat on a suitable heat-resistant silicone iron pad—never stand it upright.
  • Keep the hose free from kinks and away from the soleplate.
  • Never leave the powered iron unattended, even briefly.
  • Unplug before filling, cleaning or leaving the station.
  • Allow at least 30 minutes to cool before handling or storage.

Prevent burns and damage

The soleplate can exceed 200°C and steam can cause serious injury.

  • Never direct steam at people or animals.
  • Keep children away from the workstation.
  • Do not operate with wet hands.
  • Connect directly to a correctly rated outlet.
  • Stop using the iron if temperature control, the cable, valve or hose is damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Silver Star ES-94A FAQs

Does the ES-94A need a boiler?

No. The separate water bottle is suspended more than 1.5m above the pressing surface and gravity feeds water to the heated iron.

What is a gravity-feed iron best used for?

The manufacturer classifies the ES-94A for intermediate processing. It is particularly useful for opening seams, flattening darts, setting pleats, shaping garment sections and pressing during sewing.

How long should I press the steam switch?

Use short 1–2 second bursts with 3–4 second pauses. The manual says not to hold the steam switch continuously for more than 5–6 seconds.

Why is water coming from the soleplate?

The iron may not be fully hot, the temperature may be too low, the steam switch may be held too long, or the steam path may need maintenance. Stop, unplug and follow the supplied troubleshooting guidance.

Can I stand the iron upright between presses?

No. Silver Star instructs users to place it flat on a suitable silicone resting pad. The hot soleplate must not be left on the ironing surface or stood upright.

Is the silicone resting pad included?

The current Direct Sewing box list names the iron, water container, hose set, Teflon shoe and SF-100 purifier; it does not list a silicone rest. Because the manual requires one, confirm your package contents or add the compatible Silver Star silicone iron pad.

What water should I use?

Use clean water with the supplied water-purifier product as directed. Do not add fragrance, starch or other chemicals. Replace the purifier as required by local water conditions and its instructions.

Is a Teflon shoe included?

Yes, the NZ listing includes a Teflon shoe. It can help prevent shine and protect suitable fabrics, but you should still follow the care label and test first.

How long does the iron take to heat?

The manufacturer’s initial setup guidance is to set the control to position 4 and wait approximately five minutes before opening the bottle valve and testing steam.

Does it have a New Zealand plug?

The Direct Sewing listing specifies a 220V unit with an SAA NZ plug. Always check the rating plate on the supplied iron before connection.
