Make the finished size dependable
Swatch, wash and measure before casting on
Sirdar's reference tension is 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm using 4mm needles. Use that size as a starting point, then choose the needle or hook that gives the pattern's required gauge after washing.
- Swatch in the main stitch or colourwork pattern
- Wash the swatch on the planned wool cycle
- Reshape and dry it flat before measuring
- Adjust the tool size and repeat if needed
For baby garments: measure against the pattern's finished garment dimensions, not only the age label. Babies grow at different rates and intended ease varies between designs.
How many 50g balls will you need?
