A premium blend with purpose

Plump soft stitches, polished detail and practical care

Merino gives the yarn warmth and body, silk contributes smoothness and graceful drape, and cashmere adds an indulgent finishing touch. The DK construction creates a soft, substantial fabric while keeping cables, colourwork and texture clear.

Cosy without heaviness

Make warm baby layers and blankets with softness and loft but without chunky bulk.

Beautiful stitch clarity

Plump stitches show cables, ribs, textured motifs, lace and Fair Isle designs cleanly.

Luxury that is usable

A wool-cycle machine wash makes premium hand knits easier for families to enjoy.

Made for extra-special gifts

More warmth and quicker progress than 4 Ply

DK is an excellent choice when you want the same luxurious fibre blend in a slightly thicker, quicker-working yarn. It is especially well suited to cosy cardigans, jumpers, textured blankets and coordinated accessories.

  • Baby and toddler jumpers, cardigans and jackets
  • Cosy blankets, travel rugs and heirloom pieces
  • Hats, booties, mittens and gift sets
  • Fair Isle, cables, texture and crochet motifs

Make the finished size dependable

Swatch, wash and measure before casting on

Sirdar's reference tension is 22 stitches and 28 rows per 10cm using 4mm needles. Use that size as a starting point, then choose the needle or hook that gives the pattern's required gauge after washing.

  • Swatch in the main stitch or colourwork pattern
  • Wash the swatch on the planned wool cycle
  • Reshape and dry it flat before measuring
  • Adjust the tool size and repeat if needed
For baby garments: measure against the pattern's finished garment dimensions, not only the age label. Babies grow at different rates and intended ease varies between designs.
Plan the full project

How many 50g balls will you need?

Quantities change with size, sleeve length, stitch pattern and colour placement. Use the pattern's metreage for the exact version you are making rather than relying on a general garment estimate.

Find the required metreage

Use the total metres for the selected size, including all colours when relevant.

Divide by 116 metres

Each 50g ball contains approximately 116m. Divide and always round up to a whole ball.

Add a sensible allowance

Allow for the swatch, joins, finishing, colourwork and any planned length changes.

Example: a pattern requiring 560m needs at least five balls because 560 divided by 116 equals 4.83. Add another ball if modifications or swatching make the quantity tight.

Questions before choosing a shade?

Sirdar Snuggly Cashmere Merino Silk DK FAQs

What is this DK yarn made from?

It contains 75% extra-fine merino wool, 20% silk and 5% cashmere.

Is DK the same as 8 ply?

DK is commonly treated as the equivalent of 8 ply in New Zealand and Australia, but labels alone do not guarantee a match. Compare metreage and washed pattern gauge before substituting.

Is it machine washable?

Yes. Sirdar specifies a wool-cycle machine wash. Do not tumble dry, dry flat and follow the care symbols on the ball band.

Is it guaranteed not to irritate sensitive skin?

No yarn can be guaranteed comfortable for every wearer. Sirdar designed this blend for baby knitting, but individual fibre sensitivity varies. Test the finished fabric when this is a concern.

Can I make adult garments with it?

Yes, provided the pattern calls for a compatible DK gauge and you account for the 116m ball length. It can create luxurious hats, scarves, cardigans and other accessories beyond babywear.

Can I crochet with it?

Yes. Sirdar recommends a 4mm crochet hook as a starting point. Use the hook that gives your pattern's required washed gauge and drape.

Can I use the 4 Ply version instead?

No, not as a direct swap. Four ply is finer, has more metres per ball and produces a different gauge, fabric weight and finished size.

How many balls do I need?

Divide the pattern's required metreage by approximately 116m per ball and round up. Add a sensible allowance for the swatch, finishing and alterations.

Why might the colour look different on my screen?

Displays and lighting reproduce colour differently, and dye lots may vary slightly. Use the shade number, shade name and photograph together when selecting.
