One tool works a forward pass and a return pass
Tunisian crochet, also called Afghan crochet, combines a crochet-hook tip with the loop-holding capacity of a cable. On the forward pass, loops are collected across the row and held on the cable. On the return pass, those loops are worked off again. This creates the distinctive structure and texture associated with Tunisian crochet.
