Made for professional dyers and ambitious projects

DYPRO gives you control over the amount of dye used, making it ideal for repeat batches, large productions and projects where smaller retail dye packets are not economical.

01

Highly concentrated powder

Measure only the quantity required for each batch, then reseal the tin for future work.

02

Repeat-project economy

The large 500g format is ideal for workshops, theatre departments, costume production and commercial creative use.

03

Broad material versatility

Suitable for many natural fibres as well as nylon, rayon, spandex and Lycra when the correct method is used.

04

Hand or machine application

Use an appropriate heated dye vessel or a fully automatic front-loading washing machine, subject to the fabric type.

05

Costume and prop capability

A proven choice for costumes, theatrical textiles, feathers, selected buttons and other creative production materials.

06

Extensive shade selection

Choose from classic neutrals, deep theatrical shades, natural tones and vivid statement colours.

25kg Maximum fabric yield at the standard 10g dosage

A little powder colours a lot of fabric

Most DYPRO shades use approximately 10g of powder per 500g of dry fabric. At that dosage, one 500g tin can colour up to approximately 25kg of material.

Some darker shades require a higher concentration, so their total fabric coverage per tin is lower. Always weigh the fabric dry and use the published dosage for the selected colour number.

Professional dosage guide

The recommended amount changes by shade. These quantities are based on 500g of dry fabric.

Colour numbers Dye per 500g fabric Approximate coverage from one tin
02, 09, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 32, 33, 34, 39, 44 and 53 10g Up to approximately 25kg
05 Havana Brown, 07 Coffee and 17 Navy 12g Up to approximately 20.8kg
08 Ebony Black 16g Up to approximately 15.6kg

Figures are calculated from DYPRO’s published starting dosages. More dye may be required for additional depth, unusually absorbent fabric or a darker result. Always test before committing an entire production batch.

Screen colours are illustrative only. The finished result depends on fibre content, starting colour, dye concentration, temperature and process. Always create a sample before dyeing valuable fabric or a complete production run.

Material compatibility

Choose the method according to the fibre—not simply the appearance of the fabric. Check the care label and test a sample whenever possible.

Suitable materials

Cotton, linen, viscose, rayon, wool, silk, nylon, Lycra, elastane and spandex can be dyed using the appropriate method.

Special handling required

Wool and silk require their dedicated hand-dyeing method and must not be dyed using the washing-machine method. Follow temperature guidance carefully.

Not recommended

Pure synthetic fabrics other than nylon, polyester/wool mixtures and fabrics with waterproof, stain-resistant or other specialist finishes.

Choose the correct dyeing method

These summaries are provided as a planning guide. Read the full DYPRO instructions and the selected shade’s safety information before use.

Stovetop or heated-vessel method

For controlled batches and a wider variety of suitable fibres

  1. Weigh the dry fabric, wash thoroughly and leave damp.
  2. Calculate the required dye using the colour-number dosage guide.
  3. Wearing protective gloves, dissolve the dye in approximately 500ml of boiling water and stir thoroughly.
  4. Prepare a dedicated heat-safe dye vessel with enough hot water for the fabric to move freely.
  5. Add the dissolved dye and 30g of salt, then stir well.
  6. Add the damp fabric, raise to a simmer and stir continuously for approximately 20 minutes.
  7. Rinse until the water runs clear and dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not tumble dry.

Washing-machine method

For fully automatic front-loading machines only

  1. Dye at least 500g of dry fabric and no more than half the machine’s maximum wash load.
  2. Weigh and wash the fabric thoroughly, then leave it damp and unfolded.
  3. Wearing protective gloves, place the calculated dye quantity directly in the drum—not the detergent dispenser.
  4. Add 60g of salt per 500g of fabric, covering the dye powder.
  5. Add the damp fabric and run the longest, hottest suitable cycle without pre-wash.
  6. Do not use economy, quick-wash or half-load programmes.
  7. Remove the fabric and clean the machine immediately according to DYPRO’s complete instructions.

Wool and silk must not be machine dyed

Wool and silk require DYPRO’s dedicated hand-dyeing directions, including careful temperature control and different additives. Do not place these fibres through the washing-machine dye method.

Understanding wash fastness

DYPRO Multi-Purpose Dye is not described by the manufacturer as fully colourfast. Excess colour can remain after dyeing, and regular washing may gradually reduce shade intensity.

Wash separately

Turn dyed garments inside out and wash them separately from other items, particularly during early washes.

Consider DYPROFIX

DYPROFIX can be applied after dyeing to improve wash fastness and help reduce fading on frequently washed textiles.

Dry carefully

Dry dyed items away from direct sunlight and strong heat. The manufacturer advises against tumble drying.

Professional and creative applications

Theatre and costume

Production costumes, stage textiles, aged effects and repeat colour batches.

Film and props

Selected fabrics, feathers, buttons, trims and other production materials.

Fashion and textile studios

Sampling, custom colour work, garment development and creative fabric treatments.

Restoration and upcycling

Refreshing suitable faded fabric or moving an existing textile to a deeper shade.

Home décor projects

Suitable cushion covers, natural-fibre textiles, decorative fabric and selected upholstery components.

Craft and textile art

Fabric customisation, controlled colour effects and mixed-media textile projects.

Large dye baths

Economical measured doses for projects requiring more dye than standard retail packets provide.

Repeat production

Retain the resealed tin for future batches using the same identified shade number.

Professional product handling

DYPRO is a concentrated powdered dye and must be handled with appropriate care. Safety information varies by shade, so consult the correct Safety Data Sheet before use.

  • Wear suitable protective gloves when measuring and handling dye.
  • Avoid creating or inhaling airborne dye powder.
  • Keep the container closed when not in use.
  • Keep away from children and food preparation areas.
  • Use dedicated dyeing equipment rather than food cookware.
  • Read the label and the Safety Data Sheet for your chosen colour.
  • Do not mix cleaning chemicals.

DYPRO Multi-Purpose Dye FAQs

How much fabric will one 500g tin dye?
At the standard dosage of 10g per 500g of dry fabric, one tin can dye up to approximately 25kg. Havana Brown, Coffee and Navy use 12g per 500g, while Ebony Black uses 16g per 500g, so their total coverage is lower.
Which fabrics can be dyed with DYPRO?
DYPRO is suitable for cotton, linen, viscose, rayon, wool, silk, nylon, Lycra, elastane and spandex when the correct method is used. Always check the care label and test a sample first.
Can DYPRO dye polyester?
It is not suitable for pure polyester or most other fully synthetic fabrics, with nylon being the main exception. Polyester/wool mixtures and specialist finished fabrics are also not recommended.
Can wool or silk be dyed in the washing machine?
No. DYPRO specifically states that wool and silk must not be dyed using the washing-machine method. Use the dedicated hand-dyeing instructions with careful temperature control.
Do I need to add salt?
Yes. The standard stovetop method uses 30g of salt, while the washing-machine method uses 60g of salt per 500g of fabric. Wool and silk have separate instructions and may require a different additive.
Can DYPRO be used in any washing machine?
No. The published machine method is for fully automatic front-loading washing machines only. Dye at least 500g of fabric, load no more than half the machine capacity and avoid economy or half-load programmes.
Is DYPRO colourfast?
DYPRO Multi-Purpose Dye is not described as fully colourfast. Dyed articles should be washed separately. Applying DYPROFIX after dyeing can improve wash fastness and help reduce fading.
Will the finished colour match the colour chart exactly?
Not necessarily. Fibre composition, starting colour, fabric weight, temperature and dye concentration all influence the finished result. Screen colours are also approximate, so test a sample before dyeing valuable fabric.
Can DYPRO colour materials other than fabric?
DYPRO publishes separate instructions for selected feathers, satin shoes, buttons, plastic items, dried grasses and decorative projects. Follow the material-specific manufacturer instructions rather than the standard fabric method.
