1,500 stitches per minute
Complete long seams, patchwork chains and straight-line quilting quickly.
Sew fast, straight and accurately through garments, quilts and creative projects. The Brother PQ1600S combines speeds up to 1,500 stitches per minute, a long 7mm stitch, precision pin feeding, adjustable fabric control and a generous workspace in a strong straight-stitch specialist.
The Brother PQ1600S is not trying to be a machine with hundreds of decorative stitches. It is designed to produce a strong, consistent straight stitch at high speed.
Its simple mechanical controls, large flatbed, vertical rotary hook and robust construction make it an excellent second machine for quiltmakers, dressmakers, tailors and experienced home sewists.
Use it for patchwork piecing, free-motion quilting, garment seams, hems, top stitching, zips, rolled hems, bag panels and long runs of accurate straight stitching.
The focused straight-stitch format also means there is no touchscreen, stitch menu or complicated computer interface to work through.
The PQ1600S is faster, heavier and more specialised than a conventional domestic sewing machine, which is why it is often described as semi-commercial or semi-industrial.
It is still a portable domestic-format machine with a domestic foot controller and motor system. It is not an industrial compound-feed, needle-feed or walking-foot machine.
It is excellent for quilting, garments, tailoring, fabric bags and controlled layers. Continuous production through heavy leather, thick webbing, heavy upholstery or sailcloth requires an appropriate industrial machine.
The New Zealand package includes the equipment required for ordinary straight stitching, quilting, zip insertion, rolled hems, patchwork and Brother’s precision pin-feed system.
Complete long seams, patchwork chains and straight-line quilting quickly.
Replace conventional feed-dog contact with a single rising pin for difficult fabrics.
Adjust feed-dog height for ordinary sewing, delicate materials, pin feed or free motion.
Independent front and rear sections adapt to changes in fabric thickness.
Choose short piecing stitches or longer visible top stitching using the mechanical dial.
Cut the upper and bobbin threads using one direct button.
Set the needle to stop in the fabric for corners, appliqué and quilting.
Feed thread smoothly from larger cones using the telescopic stand.
The PQ1600S is substantially faster than most general-purpose domestic sewing machines.
High speed makes a noticeable difference when chain piecing, assembling garments, quilting long lines or completing repetitive straight-stitch work.
Sewing speed is controlled through the supplied foot controller, allowing you to slow down for corners and accelerate across longer sections.
High-speed straight stitching for quilting, dressmaking, tailoring and creative sewing.
The sewing area provides approximately 221mm of horizontal room and 145mm of height between the needle and machine arm.
This gives rolled quilts, bag panels, jackets and home-décor projects more room than a compact domestic machine.
Fit the supplied extension table to create an overall work surface measuring approximately 283 × 593mm.
Brother’s pin-feed system uses a single pin that rises through the needle plate and engages the underside of the fabric.
The pin moves in coordination with the machine’s feed action, helping control fabrics that may shift, stretch or mark under conventional feed dogs.
A dedicated pin-feed foot, feed pin and changing tool are supplied with the machine.
Reduce broad feed-dog contact that can disturb or mark the pile.
Control delicate fabric with a focused feed point beneath the foot.
Help layers maintain their alignment during straight stitching.
Provide additional control where ordinary feed-dog movement is unsuitable.
Reduce distortion while maintaining forward fabric movement.
Support precise alignment when crossing selected layered areas.
Pin feed is a specialist single-point feeding system. It is not the same as an industrial walking foot, needle feed or compound feed and does not pull heavy assemblies from above.
A colour-coded control allows the feed dogs to be set at four different operating heights.
Choose an appropriate setting for ordinary sewing, lightweight materials, pin feeding or free-motion techniques.
Presser-foot pressure is adjusted separately using the large colour-coded dial on top of the machine.
The flexible foot is divided into front and rear sections that can move independently.
As the machine approaches a thick seam, hem or layered join, the front and rear portions can sit at different heights.
This provides better fabric contact than a completely rigid foot when moving onto or away from a bulky section.
The large pressure dial allows the downward force of the presser foot to be adjusted manually.
Reduce pressure for selected fine, delicate or easily distorted materials and increase it when greater fabric control is needed.
The colour-coded guide helps you return to a known setting when changing between projects.
From short, secure patchwork stitches to long visible top stitching.
Set stitch length through the large mechanical regulator on the front of the machine.
Shorter stitches are useful for piecing and fine construction, while longer settings create visible top stitching and basting effects.
Reverse sewing is controlled through the dedicated lever, allowing the beginning and end of suitable seams to be reinforced.
Press the cutter button and the PQ1600S trims both the upper and bobbin threads.
This is particularly convenient during chain piecing, garment assembly and quilting, where many separate seams may be completed in one session.
A manual thread clipper remains available on the machine when a longer thread tail is preferred.
Activate the needle-stop function and the machine will stop with the needle lowered into the fabric.
This holds the project in position while you turn a corner, reposition your hands or adjust a quilt.
Use your knee to raise and lower the presser foot while both hands remain on the fabric.
This is especially useful while positioning patchwork, managing quilt layers, aligning corners or placing bulky projects beneath the foot.
When it is not required, the knee-lift bar can be removed and stored beneath the extension table.
Follow the clearly marked upper-thread path and operate the threading lever to guide the thread through the needle eye.
A separate heavy-thread path is provided when using selected thicker threads.
The manual tension dial gives experienced sewists direct control over upper-thread balance.
Raise the telescopic stand when using suitable cone thread and guide the thread through the upper bar.
The elevated thread path allows thread to unwind vertically and feed smoothly toward the machine.
This is useful for quilting, tailoring and longer sewing sessions where larger cones are more economical.
The PQ1600S uses a side-loading vertical rotary hook with a removable metal bobbin case.
Five durable metal bobbins are included, providing useful thread capacity for long seams and quilting.
The side cover opens for bobbin replacement, cleaning and routine hook-area maintenance.
The combination of speed, needle-down control, a large flatbed and specialist feet makes the PQ1600S particularly attractive to quilters.
Use the included 1/4-inch foot for accurate seam allowances.
Sew long runs quickly at speeds up to 1,500 stitches per minute.
Lower the feed dogs and use the supplied free-motion foot.
Support quilt weight across the included extension table.
Keep the quilt anchored while repositioning your hands.
Raise the foot without taking your hands off the quilt.
The PQ1600S can be used for garment construction, precision top stitching, hems, French seams and zip insertion.
The long stitch setting, flexible presser foot, pressure adjustment and specialist zipper feet make it useful for a broad range of dressmaking techniques.
The supplied separator sits between two layers as they approach the needle.
It is useful when attaching lining to outer fabric or sewing materials that need to remain separated before reaching the stitch line.
The PQ1600S sews a straight stitch only. It does not sew zigzag, stretch stitches, decorative patterns or automatic buttonholes.
It has a fixed needle position and does not use twin needles.
It does not have a free arm, touchscreen, automatic tension, built-in speed slider, embroidery capability or Wi-Fi.
Its pin-feed system is not an industrial compound-feed mechanism and does not replace a walking-foot industrial machine for heavy production.
For most owners, the PQ1600S works best as a dedicated straight-stitch partner alongside an ordinary domestic machine or overlocker.
The included feet and tools cover the core techniques most PQ1600S owners purchase the machine to perform.
The extension table, knee lift, cone stand and metal bobbins make the machine practical for long sessions straight out of the box.
Additional high-shank Brother accessories are available separately for gathering, heavy materials, narrow stitching, spring-action guidance and needle felting.
