A fast straight-stitch specialist with a generous workspace, extension table and professional-style fabric controls.
One stitch, done exceptionally well

Built for sewists who value speed, space and straight-stitch quality

The Brother PQ1600S is not trying to be a machine with hundreds of decorative stitches. It is designed to produce a strong, consistent straight stitch at high speed.

Its simple mechanical controls, large flatbed, vertical rotary hook and robust construction make it an excellent second machine for quiltmakers, dressmakers, tailors and experienced home sewists.

Use it for patchwork piecing, free-motion quilting, garment seams, hems, top stitching, zips, rolled hems, bag panels and long runs of accurate straight stitching.

The focused straight-stitch format also means there is no touchscreen, stitch menu or complicated computer interface to work through.

What “semi-commercial” really means

The PQ1600S is faster, heavier and more specialised than a conventional domestic sewing machine, which is why it is often described as semi-commercial or semi-industrial.

It is still a portable domestic-format machine with a domestic foot controller and motor system. It is not an industrial compound-feed, needle-feed or walking-foot machine.

It is excellent for quilting, garments, tailoring, fabric bags and controlled layers. Continuous production through heavy leather, thick webbing, heavy upholstery or sailcloth requires an appropriate industrial machine.

Fast, direct mechanical control

Up to 1,500 stitches per minute

The PQ1600S is substantially faster than most general-purpose domestic sewing machines.

High speed makes a noticeable difference when chain piecing, assembling garments, quilting long lines or completing repetitive straight-stitch work.

Sewing speed is controlled through the supplied foot controller, allowing you to slow down for corners and accelerate across longer sections.

  • Up to 1,500 stitches per minute
  • Foot-controller speed control
  • Stable high-speed construction
  • Efficient chain piecing

Brother PQ1600S with extension table supporting a rolled quilt
The included extension table supports quilt weight and expands the flat sewing surface.
Room for quilts and large projects

Generous needle-to-arm space

The sewing area provides approximately 221mm of horizontal room and 145mm of height between the needle and machine arm.

This gives rolled quilts, bag panels, jackets and home-décor projects more room than a compact domestic machine.

Fit the supplied extension table to create an overall work surface measuring approximately 283 × 593mm.

  • Approximately 221mm throat width
  • Approximately 145mm throat height
  • 283 × 593mm table workspace
  • Extension table included
  • Supports quilt weight
  • Useful for free-motion work
Brother-exclusive fabric control

Precision pin-feed mechanism

Brother’s pin-feed system uses a single pin that rises through the needle plate and engages the underside of the fabric.

The pin moves in coordination with the machine’s feed action, helping control fabrics that may shift, stretch or mark under conventional feed dogs.

A dedicated pin-feed foot, feed pin and changing tool are supplied with the machine.

Control fabrics that are difficult to feed

Where pin feeding can help

Velvet and napped fabrics

Reduce broad feed-dog contact that can disturb or mark the pile.

Thin materials

Control delicate fabric with a focused feed point beneath the foot.

Slippery fabrics

Help layers maintain their alignment during straight stitching.

Quilt layers

Provide additional control where ordinary feed-dog movement is unsuitable.

Soft materials

Reduce distortion while maintaining forward fabric movement.

Matched seams

Support precise alignment when crossing selected layered areas.

Pin feed is a specialist single-point feeding system. It is not the same as an industrial walking foot, needle feed or compound feed and does not pull heavy assemblies from above.

Match the feeding action to the material

Four feed-dog height positions

A colour-coded control allows the feed dogs to be set at four different operating heights.

Choose an appropriate setting for ordinary sewing, lightweight materials, pin feeding or free-motion techniques.

Presser-foot pressure is adjusted separately using the large colour-coded dial on top of the machine.

  • Four feed-dog positions
  • Colour-coded adjustment
  • Standard fabric feeding
  • Fine-fabric control
  • Pin-feed selection
  • Feed dogs lowered for free motion

Brother PQ1600S flexible presser foot crossing a thick denim seam
The front and rear sections of the flexible foot can move independently over changing thicknesses.
Cross thickness changes more smoothly

Unique flexible presser foot

The flexible foot is divided into front and rear sections that can move independently.

As the machine approaches a thick seam, hem or layered join, the front and rear portions can sit at different heights.

This provides better fabric contact than a completely rigid foot when moving onto or away from a bulky section.

  • Denim hems
  • French seams
  • Layered joins
  • Bulky seam intersections
  • Bag construction
  • Top stitching
Set the pressure for the material

Colour-coded presser-foot pressure adjustment

The large pressure dial allows the downward force of the presser foot to be adjusted manually.

Reduce pressure for selected fine, delicate or easily distorted materials and increase it when greater fabric control is needed.

The colour-coded guide helps you return to a known setting when changing between projects.

  • Manual pressure control
  • Colour-coded reference
  • Fine-fabric adjustment
  • Layered-material control
  • Useful with pin feeding
  • Independent of feed-dog height
7mm Maximum straight-stitch length

From short, secure patchwork stitches to long visible top stitching.

Mechanical stitch-length control

Choose the right stitch for the job

Set stitch length through the large mechanical regulator on the front of the machine.

Shorter stitches are useful for piecing and fine construction, while longer settings create visible top stitching and basting effects.

Reverse sewing is controlled through the dedicated lever, allowing the beginning and end of suitable seams to be reinforced.

  • Up to 7mm forward stitch length
  • Mechanical regulator
  • Dedicated reverse lever
  • Patchwork piecing
  • Garment construction
  • Decorative top stitching
Finish each seam with one button

Automatic upper and bobbin thread cutter

Press the cutter button and the PQ1600S trims both the upper and bobbin threads.

This is particularly convenient during chain piecing, garment assembly and quilting, where many separate seams may be completed in one session.

A manual thread clipper remains available on the machine when a longer thread tail is preferred.

  • Cuts upper thread
  • Cuts bobbin thread
  • Direct front-panel button
  • Useful for chain piecing
  • Reduces scissor handling
  • Manual clipper also provided
Keep your exact sewing position

Programmable needle-down stop

Activate the needle-stop function and the machine will stop with the needle lowered into the fabric.

This holds the project in position while you turn a corner, reposition your hands or adjust a quilt.

Particularly useful for

  • Patchwork corners
  • Free-motion quilting
  • Top stitching
  • Appliqué
  • Curved seams
  • Precise stopping
Keep both hands on the project

Removable knee lift included

Use your knee to raise and lower the presser foot while both hands remain on the fabric.

This is especially useful while positioning patchwork, managing quilt layers, aligning corners or placing bulky projects beneath the foot.

When it is not required, the knee-lift bar can be removed and stored beneath the extension table.

Spend less time threading the needle

Brother F.A.S.T. needle threader

Follow the clearly marked upper-thread path and operate the threading lever to guide the thread through the needle eye.

A separate heavy-thread path is provided when using selected thicker threads.

The manual tension dial gives experienced sewists direct control over upper-thread balance.

  • Lever-assisted needle threading
  • Manual tension dial
  • Heavy-thread guide
  • Visible upper-thread path
  • Telescopic cone stand
  • Spool net and cushion included
Brother PQ1600S F.A.S.T. needle-threading mechanism
The lever-assisted threader helps guide the upper thread through the needle eye.
Use larger thread cones without a separate stand

Built-in telescopic cone-thread stand

Raise the telescopic stand when using suitable cone thread and guide the thread through the upper bar.

The elevated thread path allows thread to unwind vertically and feed smoothly toward the machine.

This is useful for quilting, tailoring and longer sewing sessions where larger cones are more economical.

Brother PQ1600S side-access vertical rotary hook and metal bobbin
The side cover provides access to the vertical rotary hook and metal bobbin.
Strong, traditional hook system

Vertical rotary hook and metal bobbins

The PQ1600S uses a side-loading vertical rotary hook with a removable metal bobbin case.

Five durable metal bobbins are included, providing useful thread capacity for long seams and quilting.

The side cover opens for bobbin replacement, cleaning and routine hook-area maintenance.

  • Vertical rotary hook
  • Removable metal bobbin case
  • Five metal bobbins included
  • Side-access cover
  • Built-in bobbin thread cutter
  • Easy hook-area cleaning access
A focused machine for quiltmaking

Piecing, straight-line and free-motion quilting

The combination of speed, needle-down control, a large flatbed and specialist feet makes the PQ1600S particularly attractive to quilters.

Patchwork piecing

Use the included 1/4-inch foot for accurate seam allowances.

Chain piecing

Sew long runs quickly at speeds up to 1,500 stitches per minute.

Free-motion quilting

Lower the feed dogs and use the supplied free-motion foot.

Straight-line quilting

Support quilt weight across the included extension table.

Needle-down control

Keep the quilt anchored while repositioning your hands.

Knee lift

Raise the foot without taking your hands off the quilt.

More than a quilting machine

Excellent straight-stitch capability for garments and tailoring

The PQ1600S can be used for garment construction, precision top stitching, hems, French seams and zip insertion.

The long stitch setting, flexible presser foot, pressure adjustment and specialist zipper feet make it useful for a broad range of dressmaking techniques.

  • Garment seams
  • Tailoring
  • Top stitching
  • Rolled hems
  • Standard zips
  • Invisible zips
  • French seams
  • Lined garments
Control separate fabric layers

Fabric separator included

The supplied separator sits between two layers as they approach the needle.

It is useful when attaching lining to outer fabric or sewing materials that need to remain separated before reaching the stitch line.

Important limitations to understand

The PQ1600S sews a straight stitch only. It does not sew zigzag, stretch stitches, decorative patterns or automatic buttonholes.

It has a fixed needle position and does not use twin needles.

It does not have a free arm, touchscreen, automatic tension, built-in speed slider, embroidery capability or Wi-Fi.

Its pin-feed system is not an industrial compound-feed mechanism and does not replace a walking-foot industrial machine for heavy production.

For most owners, the PQ1600S works best as a dedicated straight-stitch partner alongside an ordinary domestic machine or overlocker.

Frequently asked questions

Brother PQ1600S FAQ

Is the Brother PQ1600S an industrial sewing machine?

No. It is a fast, robust domestic-format straight-stitch machine. It offers some industrial-style features but does not have an industrial table, oil system, motor or compound-feed mechanism.

Why is it described as semi-commercial or semi-industrial?

The description refers to its speed, weight, dedicated straight stitch, large workspace and mechanical controls. It should not be confused with a true industrial production machine.

What stitches does the PQ1600S sew?

It sews one straight stitch with adjustable length up to 7mm and manual reverse sewing.

Does it sew zigzag stitches?

No. The machine is straight stitch only.

Can it sew buttonholes?

It does not have an automatic buttonhole function. Use another domestic machine for zigzag-based buttonholes.

How fast does it sew?

Maximum sewing speed is up to 1,500 stitches per minute.

How is the sewing speed controlled?

Speed is controlled through the supplied foot controller. There is no electronic speed-limit slider.

What is the maximum stitch length?

The maximum forward straight-stitch length is 7mm.

How large is the sewing workspace?

The needle-to-arm opening is approximately 221mm wide and 145mm high. With the table installed, the workspace measures approximately 283 × 593mm.

Does it include the extension table?

Yes. The extra-large fabric extension table is included.

What is pin feed?

A single pin rises from beneath the needle plate and engages the underside of the fabric, providing focused feeding for selected difficult materials.

Is pin feed the same as a walking foot?

No. Pin feed acts from beneath the material. A walking foot adds movement from above, while industrial compound feed coordinates multiple feeding actions.

Does it include a walking foot?

New Zealand package contents should be checked at the time of purchase. The current New Zealand brochure lists the flexible, pin-feed, quilting and garment feet but does not clearly list a walking foot as standard.

What does the flexible presser foot do?

Its front and rear sections can move independently, helping the foot adapt when crossing a change in fabric thickness.

Can the presser-foot pressure be adjusted?

Yes. The large colour-coded dial provides manual pressure adjustment.

Can the feed dogs be lowered?

Yes. The four-position feed control includes settings for ordinary feeding, pin feed and feed dogs lowered for free-motion work.

Can it free-motion quilt?

Yes. Lower the feed dogs and fit the included free-motion quilting foot.

Does it include a 1/4-inch quilting foot?

Yes. A 1/4-inch foot is included for patchwork piecing.

Does it have needle up and down?

Yes. The needle can be programmed to stop lowered in the fabric.

Does it cut the thread automatically?

Yes. The direct cutter button trims both the upper and bobbin threads.

Does it include a knee lift?

Yes. The removable knee lift allows the presser foot to be raised while both hands remain on the project.

Can it use large thread cones?

Yes. A built-in telescopic cone-thread stand is provided.

Can it use heavier top-stitching thread?

A heavy-thread guide is provided for selected thicker threads. Needle size, tension and material must still be matched correctly.

Can the PQ1600S sew denim?

Yes. It is well suited to normal garment denim, hems and layered seams with the correct needle, thread, pressure and stitch length.

Can it sew canvas and bags?

It can sew many fabric bags and moderate canvas projects. Very heavy assemblies, thick webbing or continuous heavy production require a suitable industrial walking-foot machine.

Can it sew leather?

It may sew some thin, soft garment leather with the correct specialist setup. It is not the correct machine for routine leather goods, thick hide or heavy leather production.

Does it have a free arm?

No. It has a fixed flatbed design.

What bobbins does it use?

It uses metal bobbins in a removable side-loading vertical rotary-hook bobbin case.

How much does it weigh?

The current Brother New Zealand sell sheet gives the machine weight as approximately 10.8kg, excluding the table and loose accessories.

Is it a good only sewing machine?

It can be if you only need straight stitching. Most owners pair it with a domestic zigzag machine or overlocker for buttonholes, stretch stitches, overcasting and decorative work.
