Fine alpaca fibres bloom gently around the strand, softening stitch edges and giving simple knitting a romantic, premium finish.
Featherlight alpaca softness with breathable cotton structure
Mode Alpaca Cotton is a luxury DK yarn with a wonderfully airy secret: fine alpaca fibres are held inside a delicate cotton mesh tube. The result is a soft romantic halo, generous metreage and elegant warmth without the dense weight of a conventional DK fabric.
- 57% alpaca creates cloud-like softness, gentle warmth and a beautiful halo.
- 43% cotton forms the breathable mesh that gives this lightweight yarn its structure.
- 120m from a 25g ball offers impressive coverage with very little weight.
- Eleven coordinated shades suit refined garments, tonal colourwork and modern accessories.
How Alpaca Cotton becomes so light
Rather than twisting the fibres into a dense conventional strand, Rowan uses a fine cotton mesh tube filled with soft alpaca. This construction creates volume, halo and warmth while keeping the finished piece remarkably light and comfortable.
The cotton tube holds the alpaca in place, supports the strand and balances warmth with a lighter, more breathable feel.
Made for softly elegant layers
The halo gives even straightforward stitches a refined soft-focus finish. Stocking stitch looks polished, lace feels ethereal, colourwork blends beautifully and relaxed shapes drape without becoming heavy.
- Lightweight sweaters, cardigans and summer layering pieces
- Vests, ponchos and softly draped wraps
- Hats, snoods, scarves and gift-worthy accessories
- Lace, subtle texture, stripes and soft-edged colourwork
- Rowan designs written specifically for Alpaca Cotton

Measure after the alpaca has relaxed
Rowan's reference tension is 23 stitches and 31 rows per 10cm using 3.75mm needles. The fine mesh construction behaves differently from a tightly spun DK yarn, and alpaca can relax after washing. Make a generous swatch, wash it as directed, dry it flat and measure the fabric beneath the halo.
Calculate the quantity from your pattern
A 25g ball looks small, but the airy construction provides approximately 120 metres. Use the total metreage or ball count written for the exact size and version you are making.
Find the required metres
Read the total for your size rather than relying on a broad sweater estimate.
Divide by 120
A project requiring 960m uses exactly 8 balls before any allowance.
Round up and add margin
For that example, consider 9 balls to cover swatching, joins and small adjustments.

Keep your finished knit soft and beautifully shaped
Use lukewarm water and a suitable gentle cleanser. Avoid rubbing, twisting, vigorous agitation and sudden temperature changes.
Lift the wet item carefully, press out moisture without wringing, reshape it and dry flat in the shade.
Do not tumble dry, bleach or iron. Consult a professional cleaner about suitable dry-cleaning solvents when needed.
Before you cast on with Alpaca Cotton
Is Mode Alpaca Cotton a DK or 8 ply yarn?
It is commonly sold as DK and can be considered a light 8 ply equivalent in New Zealand. Its airy mesh construction makes it much lighter than many conventional DK yarns, so use Rowan's 23-stitch reference gauge and your pattern gauge rather than relying on the ply name alone.
Why is the ball only 25g?
The yarn is extremely light. Each 25g ball contains approximately 120 metres, which is comparable in length to many much heavier DK balls. Plan by metreage or by the exact ball count in a Rowan Alpaca Cotton pattern.
Is Alpaca Cotton wool-free?
Yes, it contains no sheep wool. It is made from 57% alpaca and 43% cotton. Alpaca is still an animal fibre, and individual skin sensitivities vary.
Is it suitable for warmer-weather knitting?
Its cotton mesh and featherlight construction make it more breathable and less dense than many alpaca yarns. It is excellent for trans-seasonal layers, although the alpaca halo still provides warmth.
Will the halo hide stitch patterns?
The halo softens stitch edges rather than hiding every detail. Stocking stitch, simple texture, larger lace motifs and colourwork are beautiful, but very tiny or highly sculpted details will look less crisp than they would in a smooth cotton or wool yarn.
Can I crochet with Alpaca Cotton?
Yes. It can create lightweight crochet garments and accessories when the pattern gauge and metreage are suitable. Make a washed sample first to judge the halo, drape and stitch definition.
Can I substitute it in another DK pattern?
Sometimes, but the unusual light construction and alpaca drape matter as much as yarn weight. Compare gauge and metreage, then wash and dry a generous swatch before committing to a garment.
How many balls should I order?
Use the ball count stated for your exact pattern size, or divide the required metres by 120 and round up. Add an allowance for swatching, joins, pattern matching and planned adjustments.
Are online colours exact?
The colour card uses the exact live variant images, but screens and lighting vary. Use the shade number as the most dependable reference and allow for dye-lot variation.
