How to use DYLON Machine Dye Pods
For the most even result, use clean fabric and avoid overloading the washing machine. Always read the instructions supplied with your chosen pod before beginning.
Weigh and pre-wash
Weigh the fabric while dry, then wash it thoroughly. Leave the clean fabric damp and place it loosely in the drum.
Add the open pod
Remove the outer sleeve and lid completely. Stand the open pod upright directly on top of the damp fabric.
Run a full cycle
Run a complete 40°C cotton cycle without detergent or pre-wash. Avoid quick, delicate or water-saving cycles.
Wash again
Remove the empty pod, add detergent and repeat the full wash cycle. Dry away from strong heat and direct sunlight.
Clean the machine after dyeing
Once the dyed fabric has been removed, add detergent and run an empty 40°C cycle. Wipe around the door seal and check the detergent drawer for any remaining dye. Follow the instructions on the product packaging for complete cleaning guidance.
How much will one pod dye?
Weigh the clean, dry fabric before dyeing. The amount of fabric determines the depth of the finished shade.
Full, rich shade
One pod dyes up to approximately 600g of suitable dry fabric to the displayed shade. This is roughly equivalent to one pair of jeans, four lightweight T-shirts or one bath towel, depending on weight.
A lighter colour result
The same pod can colour a larger fabric load, but the finished shade will become progressively lighter. Use additional pods when a full shade is required across a larger weight of fabric.
For even movement and colour coverage, do not fill the washing machine with tightly packed fabric. DYLON recommends limiting the dye load to no more than approximately half the machine’s maximum capacity.
Which fabrics can you dye?
Fibre content matters more than the appearance or thickness of the fabric. Always check the care label before choosing a dye.
Best colour uptake
Cotton, linen and viscose absorb DYLON Machine Dye most effectively and provide the strongest, richest colour result.
Lighter results
Cotton/polyester and viscose/polyester blends may be dyed, but the synthetic content will remain largely unchanged, producing a lighter or softly heathered result.
Not suitable
Fully synthetic polyester, acrylic and nylon will not absorb this dye. Avoid waterproof, stain-resistant, dry-clean-only or specially finished fabrics.
Your starting colour still matters
Fabric dye adds colour—it does not remove the colour already present. The original shade and the new dye colour combine to create the final result.
Pale fabric offers the greatest flexibility. Moving to a darker shade generally produces the most predictable transformation.
For example, applying blue dye over red fabric may create a purple result rather than the blue shown on the pod.
Prints, contrasting fibres, stains, bleach marks and faded areas may remain visible after dyeing.

Before you dye
- Check the fabric care label and fibre composition.
- Weigh the fabric while completely dry.
- Pre-wash to remove finishes, softener, dirt and oils.
- Choose a dye colour darker than the starting fabric.
- Make sure the fabric can tolerate a full 40°C cotton cycle.
- Use the entire pod once opened.
- Follow all safety and handling directions on the packaging.
Remember the stitching
Many garments use polyester sewing thread, even when the main fabric is cotton. The fabric may change colour while synthetic stitching, zips, labels, buttons and trims remain close to their original shade.
Stains are not always concealed
Dye colours the fibres but does not act like opaque paint. Oil marks, bleach damage, uneven fading and some stains can remain visible or absorb colour differently.
