OLFA RTY-3/DX Deluxe 60mm Ergonomic Rotary Cutter

$44.90 $54.90

The deluxe 60mm cutter built for bigger cutting jobs

More cutting depth, less hand strain and a blade that retracts when you release

The OLFA RTY-3/DX Deluxe 60mm Rotary Cutter brings serious cutting power to medium and large sewing, quilting and craft projects. Its ergonomic ComfortGrip handle, squeeze-to-cut trigger and large 60mm blade make thicker materials and suitable fabric stacks easier to manage with controlled pressure.

  • Large 60mm blade gives greater cutting depth for thicker materials and suitable layers.
  • Squeeze-to-cut trigger exposes the blade while held and retracts it when released.
  • Two-way safety lock can secure the blade closed for storage or open for sustained cutting.
  • Right- or left-handed setup lets the blade assembly be reversed for the chosen cutting hand.

Why choose a 60mm rotary cutter?

Greater depth for bigger projects, thicker materials and fabric stacks

The larger blade reaches deeper than a 45mm cutter and travels efficiently along long lines. It is the useful step up when an everyday cutter feels undersized for the material or the number of layers.

Quilting and fabric stacks

Cut long strips, borders, backing, batting and suitable layered cotton fabric with a fresh blade and stable ruler technique.

Thicker sewing materials

Well suited to suitable fleece, wool, felt, leather and other materials that benefit from the reach of a larger blade.

Medium and large projects

Cover more distance on broad pattern pieces, soft furnishings, bag making and production-style cutting.

Layer capacity depends on the material. OLFA states that this model can cut up to 12 layers of cotton in suitable conditions. Fabric thickness, finish, blade condition, mat, ruler and cutting technique all affect the practical result.
OLFA RTY-3/DX dual-action safety lock and squeeze trigger
ComfortGrip handle and dual-action safety

Squeeze to cut, release to retract

The curved, anti-slip handle is shaped to reduce hand and wrist fatigue during repeated cutting. Unlock the cutter, squeeze the lower trigger to expose the edge, then release your grip so the blade retracts into the body.

Comfort for repeated cuts

The moulded cushioned grip and curved handle spread pressure across the hand instead of concentrating it at the fingertips.

Blade retraction by release

In normal unlocked operation, relaxing the trigger returns the blade into its guard between cuts.

Positive lock control

The lock can prevent the blade emerging for storage or hold it open for sustained high-volume cutting.

Choose the correct lock state

Closed for storage, retracting for normal use, open only when intentional

The lock gives RTY-3/DX three useful operating states. For most sewing and quilting work, use the retracting action so the blade returns inside the body as soon as your grip relaxes.

Locked closedThe blade cannot emerge when the trigger is squeezed. Use this for storage and transport.
UnlockedSqueeze to expose the blade, then release to retract. This is the normal cutting mode.
Locked openAvailable for sustained cutting when intentionally selected. Keep the exposed edge under full control.

Cut with power, not excess force

Four steps for controlled 60mm rotary cutting

Use a fresh blade, a stable self-healing mat and only the pressure needed to complete the cut. A large blade is efficient, but it still depends on good setup and a clear cutting path.

1

Prepare the surface

Lay the material flat on a suitable cutting mat and remove every pin, clip, zip and hard fastener from the blade path.

2

Set the lock deliberately

Keep the blade locked closed until the cutter is positioned and you are ready to begin.

3

Keep it upright and cut away

Hold the blade vertical, keep fingers safely inside the ruler edge and guide the cutter smoothly away from your body.

4

Retract and secure

Release the trigger so the blade retracts, then lock it closed before setting down, carrying or storing the cutter.

Sharp blade safety: the retracting mechanism reduces blade exposure but does not make the tool child-safe or injury-proof. Keep hands clear, cut away from your body, use a proper mat and lock the cutter closed whenever it is not actively cutting.
Is 60mm the right size for you?

Excellent for depth and long cuts, less suited to tiny detail

Choose RTY-3/DX when cutting depth, larger work and handle comfort matter most. A smaller cutter remains easier to steer around tight curves and compact pattern pieces.

A particularly useful choice for...

  • Thicker suitable fabrics and craft materials
  • Quilting cotton stacks and long strip cutting
  • Fleece, wool, felt and suitable leather
  • Medium and large pattern pieces
  • Longer sessions where grip comfort matters
  • Right- or left-handed cutting

Choose a smaller cutter for...

  • Tiny pieces and intricate curves
  • Short detail cuts where visibility is more important than depth
  • Projects better suited to an 18mm or 28mm blade
  • Materials containing hidden pins, clips or hard fasteners
  • Cutting without a protective mat
  • Any job requiring excessive force
The correct replacement blade family

Choose OLFA RB60 or RB60H 60mm blades

RB60H EndurancePremium long-life 60mm straight blade. One genuine RB60H is preloaded in this cutter.
RB60 StandardGenuine OLFA 60mm tungsten-steel straight replacement blade, sold separately.
Size matters: only compatible OLFA 60mm RB60 or RB60H blades fit RTY-3/DX. The 45mm RB45 family, including wave and pinking blades, is not compatible.
Blade changes and left-handed setup

Lock the blade closed before removing any component

The blade, washer and fixing parts must be installed in the correct order. Reversing every component into the mirrored arrangement lets the cutter be configured for left-handed use.

  • Engage the closed lock and confirm the blade is fully protected.
  • Place the cutter on a stable surface rather than working in your palm.
  • Remove the blade fixing parts and keep them in their original order.
  • Install every part in the correct orientation for the chosen cutting hand.
  • Secure the assembly and check rotation, retraction and lock operation before cutting.

OLFA RTY-3/DX FAQs

What blade comes in the cutter?

One genuine OLFA RB60H 60mm Endurance straight blade is preloaded. It is OLFA's premium longer-life alternative to the standard RB60 blade.

Which replacement blades fit RTY-3/DX?

Use OLFA RB60 or RB60H 60mm straight blades. 45mm RB45, RB45H, WAB45 and PIB45 blades do not fit this cutter.

How does the squeeze-handle action work?

With the cutter unlocked, squeeze the lower handle to expose the blade. Release the handle and the blade retracts into the body. Lock it closed after use.

Can the blade be locked open?

Yes. OLFA provides an open lock position for sustained high-volume cutting. Because this leaves the edge exposed, use it only deliberately and return the blade to the closed lock as soon as cutting is finished.

Will it really cut 12 layers?

OLFA states up to 12 layers of cotton in suitable conditions. Actual capacity varies with fabric thickness, finish, blade condition, mat, ruler and technique. Test a smaller stack first and never force the cutter.

Can a left-handed person use it?

Yes. OLFA specifies RTY-3/DX for both right- and left-handed users. The blade and every retaining component must be installed in the correct mirrored orientation.

Is 60mm better than 45mm?

It is better when you need greater cutting depth, longer cuts or thicker suitable materials. A 45mm cutter is the more versatile everyday size, while 18mm and 28mm cutters are easier to steer around tight curves.

What is included?
