Cut, rotate and keep the project perfectly placed

Turn the mat, not your fabric

The OLFA RM-12S is a compact 12 x 12 inch self-healing rotary mat that turns smoothly through 360 degrees. Make one cut, rotate to the next angle and continue without lifting, twisting or realigning the project under your ruler.

  • 360-degree rotation keeps the cutting angle comfortable while the project stays positioned.
  • Self-healing 12 x 12 inch surface is ideal for quilt blocks, appliqué and detailed craft work.
  • Imperial grid and angle guides support accurate squares, triangles, diamonds and more.
  • Non-slip stationary base helps the mat remain stable while the top cutting layer turns.

A simple change that improves the workflow

Why rotating the mat feels easier

Repeatedly lifting a block or leaning around the table can disturb measurements and move carefully aligned fabric. RM-12S lets the work remain on the grid while you bring each cutting edge towards your natural hand position.

1

Align

Place the project and ruler on the imperial grid and line up the first cutting edge.

2

Cut

Make the cut with a suitable rotary cutter while keeping hands clear of the blade path.

3

Rotate

Turn the top mat to the next comfortable angle, then cut again without repositioning the project.

Two pieces working as one

A rotating cutting layer over a stable non-slip base

The interlocking construction combines a soft self-healing cutting surface, a harder inner layer that resists penetration and a stationary base designed to stay put. The result is smooth rotation without sacrificing the stable foundation needed for accurate rotary cutting.

Self-healing top

The surface is designed to close after normal rotary cuts and remain smooth through repeated use.

Harder support layer

The internal structure helps prevent a rotary blade passing through the cutting surface.

Non-slip underside

The stationary bottom layer supports controlled rotation instead of sliding across the worktop.

Compact by design

Ideal for pieces that fit comfortably within 12 inches

Excellent uses

  • Squaring and trimming quilt blocks
  • Half-square triangles and flying geese
  • Appliqué and curved motifs
  • Foundation paper piecing
  • Squares, triangles, diamonds and circles
  • Scrapbooking and paper craft
  • Model making and other rotary-cut projects

Choose a larger mat for...

  • Full-width fabric strips
  • Large garment pattern pieces
  • Long borders and yardage preparation
  • Projects that extend beyond the 12 x 12 inch surface
  • Cutting that needs a metric grid
  • Work requiring a craft knife or fixed blade
Rotary blades only: OLFA specifies this rotating mat for use with rotary blades. Do not use art knives, utility knives or other fixed blades on the RM-12S surface.

Protect the flat rotating surface

Correct storage prevents permanent warping

Self-healing does not mean heat-proof or warp-proof. OLFA states that a warped mat cannot be flattened again, so storage and cleaning matter.

  • Store the mat flat and never roll it.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Do not leave it in a hot or cold vehicle.
  • Never iron on the mat or place hot tools on it.
  • Clean gently with mild detergent on a soft, damp cloth.
  • Move repeated cuts around the surface to avoid permanent grooves.
  • Remove trapped fibres with a lint roller, strong tape or art gum eraser.

Helpful answers before you order

OLFA RM-12S FAQs

Does the mat really rotate?

Yes. The green cutting layer turns through 360 degrees over a stationary non-slip base, allowing you to change cutting direction without moving the project.

Is the surface self-healing?

Yes. OLFA describes it as a professional-quality self-healing rotary mat. Vary the cutting position because repeatedly cutting the same line can eventually form a groove.

Is it single-sided or double-sided?

The RM-12S rotating mat has one self-healing cutting surface. Its underside is the stationary non-slip rotating base, not a second cutting face.

Does it have centimetres?

No. This RM-12S is the imperial model with an inch grid. The mat measures 12 x 12 inches, approximately 30.5 x 30.5cm overall.

Can I use a craft knife on it?

No. OLFA specifies this rotating mat for rotary blades only. Fixed blades and art knives can cut too deeply and damage the surface.

What angles are marked?

The imperial grid includes guides for 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° cutting.

Can I iron on the mat?

No. Heat can permanently warp the mat and damage the rotating structure. Keep irons, hot tools, direct sun and extreme temperatures away from it.

What is included?

One complete OLFA RM-12S two-part rotating mat assembly. A rotary cutter, ruler and fabric are not included.
