A premium overlocker that removes the most frustrating part of setup

The Husqvarna Viking Amber Air S400 overlocker is designed for sewists who want professional seam finishing without manually guiding thread through complicated looper pathways.

Its one-touch jet-air system sends thread through the upper and lower loopers, while the adjustable built-in needle threader assists with both needle positions. Changing thread colours, moving between projects and recovering from a broken thread becomes faster and more approachable.

Once threaded, the S400 gives you the flexibility to construct stretch garments, finish woven seams, sew rolled hems, create flatlock effects and produce decorative edges using 2, 3 or 4 threads.

The Amber Air S400 combines the convenience of air threading with the fabric control serious garment sewists need: differential feed, adjustable stitch length, adjustable cutting width, adjustable presser-foot pressure and electronic speed control.

One-touch looper threading

Thread the loopers with a controlled burst of air

Instead of manually navigating the thread through each internal looper guide, place the thread into the threading port, select the required looper and activate the air-threading lever.

This premium system is especially helpful when changing colours frequently, experimenting with decorative thread or returning to overlocking after time away from the machine.

1
Insert the thread Place the prepared thread end into the selected looper threading port.
2
Activate air threading Operate the looper threader to send the thread through the internal pathway.
3
Thread the needles Use the adjustable built-in needle threader for the left or right needle position.
Amber Air S400 features

Premium convenience with precise fabric control

The S400 goes beyond easy threading with the adjustments required for smooth seams across knit, stretch, lightweight and heavier fabrics.

01 / THREADING

Jet-Air Looper Threading

Thread the upper and lower loopers using the one-touch air-threading system rather than navigating the internal path manually.

02 / NEEDLES

Built-In Needle Threader

The adjustable needle threader can be positioned for either the left or right overlocker needle.

03 / FABRIC CONTROL

Differential Feed

Reduce stretching on knit fabric, minimise puckering on fine material or create controlled gathering.

04 / TENSION

Lay-In Tension System

Place each thread directly into its tension pathway and clearly see that it is seated correctly.

05 / STITCH CONTROL

Adjustable Stitch Length

Adjust stitch length from approximately 1–5mm to suit edge finishing, garment construction and decorative techniques.

06 / CUTTING

Adjustable Cutting Width

Fine-tune how much fabric is trimmed so the stitch forms neatly around the finished edge.

07 / PRESSURE

Adjustable Presser-Foot Pressure

Change the pressure applied to fine, medium, thick or layered fabrics for improved feeding.

08 / TWO-THREAD SEWING

Built-In Two-Thread Converter

Quickly convert the machine for lightweight two-thread finishes and decorative flatlock effects.

09 / ROLLED HEMS

Easy Rolled-Hem Conversion

Sew two or three-thread rolled hems without changing the standard presser foot or stitch plate.

10 / POWER

Electronic Speed Control

Sew at up to 1,300 stitches per minute with responsive control and piercing power throughout the speed range.

11 / VISIBILITY

LED Sewing Light

Clear illumination over the sewing area helps you monitor fabric placement and stitch formation.

12 / SAFETY

Front-Cover Safety Lock

The safety lock prevents the machine from sewing while the front cover is open.

Frequently asked questions

Husqvarna Viking Amber Air S400 FAQ

What does one-touch air threading mean?
Air threading uses a controlled burst of air to send thread through the internal upper or lower looper pathway. This removes much of the manual threading normally required inside an overlocker.
Does the Amber Air S400 also thread the needles?
The air system threads the loopers. The left and right needles are threaded separately using the machine’s adjustable built-in needle threader.
Is the Amber Air S400 suitable for a beginner?
Yes. Air threading and the built-in needle threader remove two of the main setup challenges faced by new overlocker users. You will still need to learn thread tension, differential feed and suitable settings for different fabrics, but the threading process is considerably more approachable.
Does the Amber Air S400 have automatic tension?
No. It uses accessible lay-in tension controls rather than automatic tension. This gives you direct control over the needle and looper threads for different stitches, fabrics and decorative techniques.
What fabrics can the Amber Air S400 overlock?
It can work with lightweight woven fabrics, cotton, jersey, rib knit, fleece, stretch fabric, denim and layered garment seams. Differential feed, adjustable cutting width and adjustable presser-foot pressure help you tune the machine for each fabric.
Can the Amber Air S400 sew rolled hems?
Yes. It can create two and three-thread rolled hems without requiring a separate rolled-hem presser foot or stitch plate. Rolled hems are useful for scarves, lightweight garments, napkins, frills and decorative edges.
Can it sew two-thread stitches?
Yes. The built-in two-thread converter allows two-thread overlock, wrapped-edge, rolled-edge, narrow-edge and flatlock configurations.
Is the Amber Air S400 a coverstitch machine?
No. It is a dedicated overlocker. It constructs and finishes seams, trims fabric edges, and creates rolled hems and flatlock effects. A separate coverstitch machine is required for the parallel topstitching commonly used on commercial T-shirt hems.
Which needles does the Amber Air S400 use?
The manufacturer specifies HAx1SP needles in sizes 11 or 14, with appropriate stretch-system 130/705 needles also referenced in the manual. Match the needle type and size to the fabric being sewn.
Can Direct Sewing service and support the Amber Air S400?
Yes. Direct Sewing operates a showroom, service centre and technical workshop in Henderson, Auckland. The team can assist with machine advice, overlocker thread, needles, optional accessories, servicing and repair enquiries.
Can I view or discuss the machine before ordering?
Contact Direct Sewing to confirm current showroom availability or arrange product advice. The showroom is located at 138 Railside Avenue, Henderson, Auckland, and the team can also help customers throughout New Zealand by phone or online.
