A conventional sewing machine forms the garment seam, but an overlocker adds speed, elasticity and a clean trimmed edge that closely resembles ready-to-wear clothing.
The 793Y4 uses multiple threads and loopers to wrap the cut fabric edge while the built-in knife removes excess seam allowance.
It can be used to construct many knitted garments directly with a 4-thread safety stitch or to finish woven seams after they have been sewn on a conventional machine.
Rolled hems, narrow hems, flatlocking and decorative overedge techniques further expand the machine beyond ordinary seam finishing.

The 4-thread stitch uses two needles and both loopers to form a strong, flexible seam with an enclosed edge.
It is the most commonly used overlocker stitch for constructing T-shirts, knitwear, casual clothing and stretch garments.
It may also be used to overlock woven seam allowances where additional security is wanted.
Two needle threads plus upper and lower looper threads create a secure seam and wrapped edge.
Use one needle with both loopers for lighter and less bulky seam finishing.
Remove one needle to create either a wide or narrow 3-thread overlock, depending on the remaining needle position.
This stitch is ideal for neatening woven seam allowances, finishing lightweight fabric and creating selected decorative edges.
Two independent feed-dog sections move the fabric beneath the presser foot at different rates.
A lower setting can help prevent puckering on selected lightweight fabrics, while a higher setting can reduce stretching and rippling on jersey and knits.
Increasing the differential-feed setting can also intentionally gather suitable lightweight fabric.
Changing the cutting width alters the amount of fabric remaining inside the overlocked thread formation.
Increase the width when loops appear to fall beyond the fabric edge, or reduce it when excess fabric folds beneath the stitching.
Cutting-width adjustment also changes the final stitch width and allows the finish to be balanced for different fabric weights.
The built-in rolled-hem mechanism allows fast conversion without replacing the entire needle plate.
Rolled and narrow hems are ideal for scarves, napkins, ruffles, fine garments, lingerie fabrics and decorative craft projects.
Thread type, tension, stitch length and differential feed can be adjusted to create fuller or more delicate edge effects.

Thread the machine in the order shown in the instruction book and threading chart. Incorrect threading order is one of the most common causes of broken or incomplete stitches.

Raising the presser foot releases the tension discs, making it easier to seat each thread correctly during setup.
Begin with the recommended settings, test on a fabric offcut and make small adjustments until the needle and looper threads meet correctly at the fabric edge.
The pressure-adjustment screw changes how firmly the presser foot holds the fabric against the feed dogs.
Reducing pressure may help with selected delicate or highly stretchy materials, while additional pressure can improve control over thicker fabric.

The 793Y4 can trim and finish a seam considerably faster than neatening the edge with a conventional zigzag stitch.
